Jarrariums - Lack of animals

Lack of animals

Posted: 19 Mar 2019 05:33 PM PDT

This is my fourth attempt at an ecosphere, my first was devoid of animal life although looking at the water under my microscope it seemed pretty full of microscopic life. My second had no life whatsoever. My third was the best yet and was simply a mason jar with puddle water from a deep puddle in a forest (looked like it had been there awhile). It was full of ostracods and Copepods but failed when it was over run with bacteria. I was relying on algae for that one so there wasn't any dedicated plant life. Anyway I digress,

For my fourth, I have a proper airtight container. I bought Hornwort and filled it with water from a proper pond. The problem is it seems to be nearly devoid of animal life. I seem to have captured a backsimmer (Notonectidae) and I think I've seen one copepod in the whole, large ecosphere. I don't know what it could be. People on line seem to scoop up any stagnant water and it's just teeming with all manner of tiny animals and meagwhile I have a single (and particularly small) copepod. Should I add animals? If so what type? Fairy shrimp maybe? Or glass shrimp? Interested in hearing what I should do for animal life.

Bowl setup for a single shrimp

Posted: 19 Mar 2019 12:17 PM PDT

Our betta died a while ago and my roommate is quite sad about it. I think it might be a good idea to get something like a shrimp (I don't think she would get as attached, unlike me) and see if I could raise it in a gallon or so of water, planted, doing water changes as often as necessary. I imagine I'll try to start with only a shrimp (red cherry or opae ula, probably) and maybe some small snails.

Essentially, I'd like to know the smallest and simplest setup that can keep a shrimp happy. I've only got some pothos cuttings, some marimo, and an amazon sword but I'm open to ordering more plants. If possible I would like to keep it near the window but I'm worried about temperature fluctuations. My room, in general, stays around 73°. I have a poor understanding of how to cycle a bowl or jar, so I'd love tips on that as well.

Beginner advice: Would the contents of a stream make a good basis for a new Jarrarium?

Posted: 19 Mar 2019 12:41 PM PDT

Hi, I'm looking to create a new Jarrarium. I have a stream that runs through my back garden and I was wondering if I could get some soil, plants and snails from the stream as a basis for a new Jarrarium?

Also, I have nice glass jar but wondering if it should have a lid on it? Should I also have a LED lamp as a light source? or just a normal lamp?

Many Thanks
