Noob problems

Posted: 30 Mar 2019 07:38 AM PDT

As the title suggests, I'm a total noob at this stuff. My major problem is I've tried this a few times, just using plants and potting mix etc (I've read the guide). I root my plants as best I can (I'm only using a small 1 litre kilner jar) and when I pour in the water, all I end up with is a jar full of black muddy water. I add the water really slowly, and even leave it for a few days hoping it will settle and nothing, still a jar of muddy water. It's definitely the potting mix causing it but I've tried a top layer of stones and/or sand and still the same result.

Im not even that bothered around fauna at this point, I just want to get a nice looking jar with some plants. Where am I going wrong? It's crazy frustrating. Please help! :(

To sterilize or not to sterilize?

Posted: 30 Mar 2019 06:52 AM PDT

Hey folks!

First time posting - I actually made an account because I got tired of simply lurking here. Also, on mobile so excuse any formatting, yadda yadda, yadda. I love the idea of these jarrariums, so I've decided to give making one a shot. I plan on starting with a small and a medium terrarium-style jarrarium. I've acquired the following items in preparation:

General setup items: - 2 well-sealing clear glass jars (~1L and ~500-750mL) - tongs - small rocks for a false bottom (sourced from my backyard) - fiberglass screen - activated carbon for a filter layer between substrate and fiberglass screen - An LED bulb (grow light) to put in a desk lamp (window might be too cool for the time being - Canada problems) - a timer for said lamp - spray bottle (new) - distilled water

Substrate: - potting soil (leftovers from my potted plants) - soil from outdoors - sand from outdoors - a handful of bark from a hiking path - dried tropical moss from a pet shop

Plants: - Moss - Another moss - a couple pieces of some things I found sprouting (no weeds or anything that grows too big, or too fast I don't think - I just don't know the names offhand) - more Moss (not many options here yet - once again, Canada problems)

Hardscape: - bark that had fallen from some trees (with some lichen attached) - larger stones (also from my yard) - twigs, pine cones, and dry leaves from a park nearby

Additional - springtails

Whew! Now some context:

I am making a couple jars to see how it goes. I want to use them as part of a display for one of my school projects. I want to create jars that are as self-sustaining as possible. Also, if I end up making a few more of these jars, I would like to be able to give a couple away to any interested colleagues (gotta spread the love!). The presentation I need them prepared for is April 19th - it's a bit of a time crunch, but I think I can do it! I want to start my first jar (or 2) today. I've been watching SerpaDesign's videos for instructions and ideas, but still have a few questions.

Now for my questions:

1) am I missing anything? Should I take anything else into consideration here?

2) should I sterilize the crap outta everything? I already did for the sand and stones, but should I for the bark, twigs and leaves? Should I just use make a mix using everything but the soil I found or should I include it?

Sorry if it's too many questions. I just want to improve my chances of success!

Thanks in advance for your help - really looking forward to this, and of course I'll be posting pics after I've completed my setup. Also, any questions and/or additional advice is more than welcome!

Sterilize or Go with the Flow?

Substrate: - potting soil (leftovers from my potted plants) - soil from outdoors - sand from outdoors (a cup I scooped from a previously busted and abandoned bag-o-sand left from a construction crew (?) - about a handful of bark from a hiking path (it was bark placed on the path. I grabbed a piece here and there from the path over the course of a 30-minute or so walk) - dried tropical moss from a pet shop

Plant suggestions

Posted: 29 Mar 2019 06:33 PM PDT

Hey guys so I just started my first two jarrariums today. I have a Marimo Moss ball and a little plant I forgot the name of from Petsmart In one and a white ribbon plant in the other. I just found out the white ribbon plant is not actually an aquatic plant however so:

1) will my ribbon plant be ok planted in the jarrarium if the leaves are pretty much completely above water?

2) do you guys have any plant suggestions? I'd like to buy some frogbit but I'm not sure what else

3) where do you guys buy plants online for your jarrariums? I can't seem to find a store that sells aquatic/semi-aquatic plants anywhere in my area.

Here is a photo of them. Any suggestions (plants, care, decorations) would be wonderful!!

Nutrient testers?

Posted: 29 Mar 2019 12:48 PM PDT

I was wondering what kinds of testers you use. I have a month old tank with some shrimp, but they just started to be extremely inactive. Online, it looks like maybe my nitrogen might be high.

Otherwise I use a combo of hard well water and ro water.
