Aquatic Snails Narrowly avoided disaster |
Posted: 09 Mar 2019 01:46 PM PST We have a semi small (15g) freshwater community tank. Over the last week or so, I realized I hadn't seen our Nerite snail lately. He often hides in corners hidden by taller plants, but it was odd not to have seen him. We had an ammonia spike recently, and I assumed he hadn't made it. Today I cleaned the tank, and found him, shell overturned, on top of our physical filter media in the filter compartment. He was completely exposed to the air and his shell felt dry as a bone. I don't know how he ended up in that part of the tank, but I figured he got stuck and dried out. We were sad, and put the shell in the bucket with the used water and set it aside (we use the old water to fertilize our plants). Some two hours later my husband goes to deal with it and calls me in. Our snail is now attached to the side of the pail (which thankfully we only use for fish water), apparently alive! We immediately transferred him back to the tank. He's now (slowly) starting to move around the tank floor. If I hadn't done the water today, or if we hadn't put him in the bucket, or if we hadn't chilled our heels between chores... he might have gone before his time. But now, he's back where he belongs. A little worse for wear, but we're not ready to count him out yet. [link] [comments] | ||
