Clown died at week 4 in QT - what to do with his roommate? Posted: 05 Feb 2019 07:40 PM PST Hi all, I am a fairly new reefer, about 4 months in at this point. I was quarantining a captive bred Ocellaris clown and a lawnmower blenny (wild caught, I think?) from LiveAquaria in a 10 gallon QT tank for the past four weeks. The clown has been social, eating and doing quite well until the past 4-5 days, where he has been low in the water column, staring at the wall, and seemingly uninterested in food. The blenny hides almost all the time, but seems to eat algae wafers and nori, and just darts back into his hiding place when I get close to the tank. Yesterday we had a power failure and the tank temp dropped from 77 to around 65 over the course of 5 hours before power was restored. It climbed back to 77 in another 6 hours or so. This morning I woke up to the clown dead on the bottom. The blenny seems unchanged. There are no obvious signs of disease on the clown (no spots, discolorations, etc.) It's possible that I wiped off any extant brooklynella mucus, as I dabbed him with a paper towel before looking under a microscope. I can't figure out what happened to this clown! Although I did see these behavioral changes in the last week, and we had the water temperature incident. I have been doing fairly regular water changes on this QT to keep the nitrates down. Ammonia has been consistently 0. Nitrite peaked at 0.2 ppm when my nitrates were at 40-50 ppm and definitely needed a water change. I did a 90% at that time. At the time of death, Nitrite was 0, ammonia 0, nitrate around 15 ppm. One more datapoint - in trying to get the blenny to eat, I probably overfed algae wafers and nori. The first time I saw the clown looking low-energy was when a piece of nori had fallen off its clip and was lying on the bottom with a white scum, like a mold or bacteria, on it. That precipitated doing the 90% water change. At this point I'm trying to figure out if the blenny is potentially infected with something as well, and if so, how to treat him. Thanks for any help anyone can provide. The past few months have been a really hard learning curve, losing a clown in the filtration system of the DT, a lawnmower blenny the day after his arrival from LiveAquaria, and now this clown. I feel a responsibility to learn more so that I can take better care of these animals who are depending on me. [link] [comments]

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 07:26 PM PST This toadstool leather came with a small brownish spot at the base that I didn't think much of at the time. It's now spread to how it looks in the photo. The tentacles come out without issue and I've done an iodine dip (had some on hand) which hasn't helped. Other corals of varying types are fine (plus, it came with the original spot as I said so I don't think I did something to cause it like tank parameters). Should I just keep any eye on it or does it have something recognizable going on? I can't find anything like it when I try searching besides shedding leathers or those on their death bed without the visible damage. Thank you! [link] [comments]
HOB refugium light on over night? Posted: 05 Feb 2019 07:22 PM PST I just got a HOB refugium, and one of the videos I saw discussing them (maybe BRS) suggested keeping the fuge light on overnight to help stabilize PH swings (since the algae in the fuge would be active over night). Does anyone doe this? Does it bother the tank's light cycle? Any other refugium tips in general? TIA for any insight or tips! [link] [comments] |
