Do chillers use up a lot of electricity? Posted: 02 Feb 2019 09:09 PM PST I'm getting a jbj 45 gallon aquarium and apparently for the summer I'll need a chiller. Now what I'm wondering is whether those use up a lot of electricity or are they like heaters since they do turn off and on when they have to get the temperature back to 76-78 degrees fahrenheit etc. I know heaters say 150 watts etc. yet they only turn on a few times throughout the day which doesn't use up a lot of electricity so I'm wondering if it's the same for chillers. Any response will help. Thank you! [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Feb 2019 02:51 PM PST My blue Hippo Tang has what looks to be a long purple spot on its forehead. Kinda looks like a blush almost. (Sorry I cant get a picture shes too shy and is hiding don't wanna stress her out anymore). The tank is a 225 gallon custom, kessil lighting, jaebo wavemakers and return pump, aquac skimmer, uv sterilizer 55 gallon sump. Ammonia is 0, nitrates .5, nitrites 0, phosphate, <.5 , calc 415, alk 9. Easily my favorite fish would love to hear if that's what shes more than likely getting and if so what do I do? All in one pico aquarium suggestions Posted: 02 Feb 2019 09:15 PM PST Hey everyone, I've been a freshwater hobbyist with experience in aquascapes for quite some time, but I've been looking to set up an efficient low cost pico tank. (3-5 gallons) Hoping to keep the initial setup cost around $150 (not sure if that's even possible) or as close to as possible. I'm thinking an all in one system might be the most practical for what I'm looking for, and I would like to keep upgrades to a minimum. In terms of stocking, I plan on keeping zoas, acans, duncans, and candy cane corals. No fish and some invertebrates. If anyone has any suggestions or experience with all in one systems, I would greatly appreciate that. Thank you! [link] [comments]

How do you guys get your zoas attached to the larger pieces of rock in your display? Posted: 02 Feb 2019 12:26 PM PST I've got some that are ready to come off of their frag plugs and would like them to be on a vertical bit of some rocks in the corner of the tank. Does a mixture of reef epoxy and super glue work to hold these down? They'll be attached to a very small piece of rubble. It's easy to do when the rock you want to attach it to can come out of the tank but this particular rocks probably weighs about 40lbs and cannot be removed. [link] [comments]

[Help] First-Timer Looking for Guidance Posted: 02 Feb 2019 01:39 PM PST Hello all- I've been interested in starting a reef aquarium for a number of years, and finally got the go-ahead from my wife this year. I'm hoping to use this as a project to interest my daughters in marine biology and ecology. Budget is a big concern, as is space. I have a 60 gallon tank and stand, but do not (I think) have room for a sump. I purchased the tank from a gentleman who was liquidating his own setup, and it included a SunSun HW-302 canister filter. I have a 300W heater, and an additional air pump. On the recommendation of my LFS, and without the benefit of a sump, I'll have a live sand bottom. I've purchased some base rock as well. Questions: -If I put 40lbs of base (dead) rock in, is it worthwhile to supplement that with 1-2 pieces of life rock to shorten the initial cycle, or should I just buckle down and go for the full 3-6 week time to completely cycle everything the long way? While it's cycling, should I still be doing water changes every couple of weeks, or does that only need to start once there are fish in there? -My LFS Guy is not a fan of mechanical media, and suggested staying entirely away from sponges/pads in the canister filter. If I go with just bio balls and carbon at the beginning, will I be screwing anything up? -LFS Guy seems to believe a protein slimmer is of dire importance. I don't think I disagree, but how long can I get away without having one? Any recommendations for a buy-once, cry-once kinda guy who still has to feed his family? -Is a 300W heater going to be enough to maintain 60 gallons? -I have the air pump, but it doesn't seem like it's going to create a lot of water movement. Are there any particular dos/don'ts I should be aware of when it comes to power heads? How much movement should I shoot for in a tank this size? -What else am I failing to consider at this point? I appreciate any input or advice you guys can offer. Thanks! [link] [comments]

Posted: 02 Feb 2019 12:45 PM PST Other plumbing that was included with the tank had damage on the threading that is causing leaks . We made a verbal agreement if for any reason I wasn't happy with the tank or if I was having issues , he wouldn't mind me returning it for a refund. Now he is bs 'ing me saying that's not what we agreed on. Am I screwed or Could I file a claim on PayPal to see if I can return the setup? [link] [comments]
Im a beginner with super basic lighting, are there any corals I can keep in my 20 gallon? Posted: 02 Feb 2019 08:43 AM PST The title makes it pretty self explanatory, but I have a standard Aqueon 20 Gallon LED tank. I have a small sun coral that is doing really well and I want to Branch out to some other corals. Besides other nonphotosynthetic coral, are there any that I can keep with this basic lighting.
