Happy Bubbles

Posted: 02 Feb 2019 07:07 PM PST

I don't know if this is just mine, but everytime I come over to see my Orandas, they all come up super excited and make little bubbles all around the waterline,so now I just call it their happy bubbles lol :) I know they're probably just wanting food but it's nice to know they like to see me. (They only do that with me,and not the other ppl I live with)

Seachem Safe for Nitrite Spike

Posted: 02 Feb 2019 11:34 AM PST

Upgraded my two Oranda's to a new 40 gallon tank - I'm currently cycling the tank (unfortunately with the fish in it) and am experiencing a nitrite spike. I used Seachem Safe to detoxify but I'm wondering whether I should be alarmed if the nitrite levels are still high when testing? I regularly use an ammonia detoxifier because the water where I live tends to naturally exhibit levels between .5 to 1.0 ppm ammonia and the tests are never accurate - should I expect the same with the nitrite/nitrate levels?

I did a 40% water change 3 days ago and afterwards tested the water and got the nitrites down to 0, nitrates to 5.0ppm and ammonia to 1.0ppm - just tested a couple minutes ago and I've got nitrites now at 1.0ppm, nitrates still at 5.0ppm and ammonia is now at 2.0ppm. Should I do another water change? I've read that changing the water while cycling could negatively impact, not sure what to do. And am I going overboard using both Seachem Safe and a separate ammonia detoxifier? Is it overkill?

I also was wondering how long I should wait to clean the filters - I've noticed some food's gotten caught in the sponges... thought I should wait a couples weeks to avoid disrupting the cycle but that can't be good having that food lodged in there for that long, right?

Can I change the sand?

Posted: 02 Feb 2019 12:51 PM PST

It's white, and it's very dirty, no matter what I do the grime doesn't come off of it. I have another 20 pound bag of it, is it too early to switch it out. Put the sand in, in december

Hiw to upsize tank?

How do I go from a smaller tank to a larger one while keeping all those good bacteria? My filter in my current tank is way too small for the larger one! I'm also changing from pebbles to sand as Cleo's getting big enough to almost fit some pebbles in her mouth.
