I noticed a pregnant shrimp last water change and this time I did a DEEP clean removing all decor and look what tiny little critter I spied! I saw about 5 more of them other than this cutie.

So I've had mollies and swordtails that bred and bred and bred the past two (almost three years). After buying new tanks to expand the population, I gave up. I gave away what I could and culled the rest. I've got a baby coming in April and with all the maintenance and money is has taken to run all the tanks, I bit the bullet and went down to one tank, with only females. I feel awful. The stress relief is alright but I still feel like a piece of shit.

Dude if you're gonna have livebearing fish please keep them separate or just buy one sex (usually females as dudes are more territorial and pick fights). Otherwise pretty soon you've got five tanks and daily maintenance that is like working a part time job. Don't be me and finally give up and have to kill 60 fish like a homicidal maniac. It messes you up.

FYI I looked around where I live and no pet place takes hobby fish from an unlicensed dealer, even for free. I guess it makes sense considering they weren't special breed fish but they were taken care of and fed correctly as pups and had no diseases or anything. Where I live there just aren't enough people interested in free fish.

I feel like a complete dumbass for letting this happen after two years of major population books every month. But my bettas simply couldn't keep up with the new fish and I already had so many grown ones because I hadn't bought population control fish right away.

Just keep in mind how easily and quickly they breed (think 7-15 new babies every month. I only waited about 5 months before getting the population in control but holy hell did it make an impact) when you're setting up an easy community tank. Just remember my asshole horror story and what I did. Don't be like me and let things get this far.
