Advice on First Timer with 16L Jar Posted: 14 Jan 2019 05:22 PM PST Hi Reddit! (Reposting this from r/PlantedTank at someones suggestion there) I am looking at starting a very small planted tank using the equipment listed below. I have done a fair bit of reading over the last few years but seeing as this is my first crack, I would love any feedback or suggestions to improve my chances of success. Local temperatures average in Winter 10-20 degrees C and Summer 19-30 degrees C (significant short term variation outside these temperatures do occur though, from 2C at night up to 44C at day). The only thing I have bought so far is the vase, I don't intend to get a lid for it. 'Required' Equipment: - Large vertical vase, 38cm high, 25cm diameter. Slightly smaller at top at appx. 17cm diameter opening. Capacity around 16L (store link here) - 6500k LED Downlight in an existing unused lamp i have (store link here) - Smart Plug for Light Timings (store link here) 'Optional' Equipment (?) - 25w Submerisble AquaOne Glass Heater (store link here) - do I need a cover to protect plants from burns? - 301F AquaOne Mini Internal Filter 250L/hr (store link here) Tools - Trim / Scaping Kit (store link here) - Aquarium Mini Magnetic Cleaner (store link here) Substrate - Base Level: 2cm of Non-fertilised organic garden soil with large chunks removed - Cover: 5cm of 3mm aquarium gravel Hardscaping Ideas - Centrally located vertical oriented dragonstone rock(s) - Some small driftwood pieces / one larger diagonal piece Plant Ideas (These are all available to me - would like to cut down to probably no more than 4 varieties given small system) - Java moss - driftwood and stone cover - Dwarf Val / Sag - for carpeting on the substrate (could be dreaming in this sort of system) - Frogbit - surface dweller and for algae control. Will keep to a relatively small amount to avoid blocking out too much light. - Anubias Nana - Corkscrew Vallisneria - Java Fern Narrow Leaf (possibly too large) Livestock (not looking to add to the system for some weeks / months while I get the hang of it) - A couple of cherry shrimp - Snail(s) of some variety Ideally I would like to have a upward sloping view from front to centre back going from small to large. Some of these plants might not be viable given the depth of tank, light source and lack of intention to add CO2. I intend to do water changes weekly. So hit me with your comments - which plants make no sense, should i spend more on a proper 'aquarium' planting substrate, should i get a filter + heater up front or perhaps later? Will I burn my money and fill my tank with tears as every last plant turns brown and dies? [link] [comments] |
