Canister recommendations for a 25 gallon 36x12x12 tank?

Posted: 16 Jun 2022 07:54 AM PDT

Right now i have an aquaclear 30 on on end and a box corner filter on the other to get the flow in the tank circulating but am having doubts after watching some fish food move its way around the surface and watching particles below. What should i look into for a canister filter? Im running co2 as well, and going to be pretty heavily stocked on plants.

Guide for New Hobbyist

Posted: 16 Jun 2022 02:34 AM PDT

Long text ahead, lot's of question, but input greatly needed.

After watching multiple videos, and meeting conflicting advice i am here to ask for your help and guidance, which could be possibly used for other new peoples wanting to come into this hobby.

Sadly when you start reading into it there is a lot of information scattered around the internet, and frankly it can be terrifying to the point where one will give up on their Aquarium owning dreams.

You think that aquarium is just buy a tank, add water some pump and that is it.But all of a sudden you need some filter media, there are hundreds of soil on the market, god damn i need a gas bottle, for a freaking grass inside of it.And in your head it starts to look like you are building a nuclear reactor in terms of equipment and money. So help inform me and new people.

Incoming is list of a lot of question, some are very basic, but its good to put them all in one place rather then searching everything on it own, since so much things need to be know, that you often forget something.

And its always good to get input from multiple people cause we could all learn something new,and teach someone something new. Some faced errors and mistakes that maybe someone never experienced so it good to know ahead.

Before answering, please put approximate amount of money one would need to come into this hobby,so new people like me know what is actual cost of owning a planted aquarium,so they could decide if they should come into owning a tank or not before it's to late.

Its easy to overspend,in my case my first and only aquarium i had, costed about 500 euros for 54L/14G

with the starter Aquarium kit, food, and many unnecessary items that LFS (local fish shop) convinced me to buy that i didn't need.

So any advice on what to spend, and on what to save would be useful for newcomer's like me.

Sadly on used items sites you can often see Aquarium's for sale after people owned em for a month or so,cause they didn't know proper care, and how much money and time they need to invest into it.

There are many errors that can happen and its better to know about it so we are prepared to fix the error's in shortest possible time,or avoid them at all.

If a skip anything important feel free to add.

1.What is difference between small and big aquarium maintenance wise?

2.Tall and narrow,or long and short tank?

3.Buying an used Aquarium, tips, how long can it stay without water before the seals go bad.?

What to inspect and how to go with price for one?

In my country used Aquariums are often 30-70% cheaper then a new Aquarium, even after being used for couple of months only,so its tempting but scary to buy and used.

  1. What kind of equipment one does need to buy and plan for with planted aquarium.

5.CO2 recommendation, how much does an setup cost, and any kind of viable solution for people who don't want to bother with a Gas bottles?

How long to leave the lights on,and should be there regular schedule for light use or it doesn't matter?

7.Monitoring systems for water, stripes or electronic devices inside the tank, recommendations and experience.

8.Filters-Internal,canister,or Hang on back filter's?

  1. Best Brand's of filter, save money on them or invest money in them?

  2. How to calculate flow rate?

  3. 1 big or 2 smaller filters.

12.Filter media tips,and personal experience.

  1. Are bubbler's necessary?

Save money on that or go cheaper?

15.Soil under sand or gravel better,or not needed?Meaning should i put 2 layers of something or not necessary?

  1. How thick should soil be?

17.Root tablet's and fertilizer tips.

18.Dry start method vs planting in a flooded tank, when is DSM good and when it's not needed?

Is water spraying alone ok or should liquid fertilizer be added aswell?

19.Planting,and how to avoid melting, browning and dying of a plants?

20.Usual errors and mistakes with starting an tank such as algae, mold etc. and fixes.

21.Monte carlo carpeting tips, how much space to leave between plants, spread it or put it as a whole?

22.After flooding the tank if DSM is used, when to trim the carpet or any other plants, and how much to cut?

  1. How deep should plant's be inserted into the gravel? Some advise to put it almost whole under ground, some say just a bit till root is covered.

24.After flooding is the water cycled and safe for fishes or should we do cycle with bacteria?

25.Any kind of fish to avoid with planted Aquarium as in are there any fishes that like to destroy plants and our hard work?

  1. How many fishes do you usually add per Liter/gallon of water, any kind of rule that you found that works the best?

27.Automatic feeders,worth it or not?

  1. How often do you feed your fish, what to do if you accidentally spill to much food inside?

  2. Fish food recommendation.Flakes,worm's-live or dry,frozen food,tabs?

30.Shrimps advice, care and tips. How many do add per aquarium.

  1. Cleaner fishes, sucker etc. Recommended kind, how many to add and how to care for them?

32.Optimal water temperature for plant's?

33.Aquarium decoration.Often one piece of decoration can be found for 15-20euros in a shop, and that add's up really quickly in terms of money.

So how to save money on rock's if they are gonna be used inside of the tank,do pieces of rock's and wood what we find in nature and in our backyard, could they be used and how to test it?

Do you wash every decoration before inserting or not?

34.Water change's how often, and what percentage of water do you usually change.

35.Any know Aquarium gimmick and equipment that one should avoid, that is usually targeted for inexperienced people?

I think those are all the necessary question for a start. If i skipped anything important feel free to add.
