I'm really liking my new lighting arrangement. (Tank light turns on later.) Kind of has an "overcast morning" feel to it.

Red Root Floaters Dying

Posted: 02 Jun 2022 06:37 AM PDT

I had a bunch of RFFs that were thriving and would flower for a while, but after adding some more plants (bacopa and hydro-japan), my RFFs have been struggling and they're practically all dead. My light setting was pretty much the same besides going from 8 hours to 6 to help with my algae issue.

Anyone know what happened or what went wrong? I went from having to sell off my extras to having practically none.

What are those abominations among my White Mosquito Larvae?

Two months in, my water lettuce is thriving. I started with only two heads, they struggled in our open top tanks, but we moved them to the BioCube and they are growing like nuts.

Will nerites destroy microsword? I've never been a huge fan of snails but I figure extra algae control is good. I appreciate any help!

Or are shrimp better?

How are people able to use planted substrates such as ada aqua soil while keeping their tanks Ph at a reasonable level?

How many different types of plants is in your tank?

Posted: 02 Jun 2022 06:19 AM PDT

I just renovated my dad's old 55 gallon aquarium over a month ago. It is going to be low tech without any CO2 and just with Miracle Grow and a sand cap. I started out with 16 varieties of plants with 2 stems each and I think I finally got to the point where they are stable and actually flourishing. Still have problems trying to figure out the names of all of them. But pretty sure I have 2 types of myrio, 2- 3 types of rotala, and 2-3 ludwigia, and there are some others ones that I have yet to nail down. I also have 8 different tissue cultures(5 different rotala, AR, S Repens, Ludwigia) that I have been working on trying to grow emersed until they are strong enough to be transplant into the aquarium. Those has been going for about 2-3 weeks, and some are doing quite well and some not so much. So once I can transfer those over, I will be looking at around 24 varieties. But there are so many different varieties I still would like to get. At least another 20-30. I realized not all of them will thrive in my tank, but I am testing out which ones will do best with my water. From what I can tell after looking at most people's tank is that there are usually around 10 varieties of plants. So I am starting to wonder if there is a reason why everyone keep a limited variety of plants.

So I am just trying to figure out how many variety of plants do you have and what size tank you have. Thank you.

This is How My High Tech Tank Works

This is How My High Tech Tank Works

I have a 120 gal freshwater planted tank. I haven't done a water change since I set it up 10.5 months ago. I have hardly any algae (I actually add algae tablets for my cleanup crew.)

My tank has a box affixed to the side of the stand where all of the electrical cables are hidden. It also displays the tank temperature. Inside the stand, lights come on when the door opens. The sump system has 2 filtration socks (I replace them 2x week), a filtration pad, and the line for the dosers (ferts and alk), a fan for summer to keep the water cool enough (AZ is spicy hot in summer), a heater for cooler months, and the return pump. It also has tubing for the overflow, with a manual crank on it that can be used to clear any blockage that may occur from plants that snuck through.

Our IPAD has turned into a sophisticated tank monitoring system, using Apex. This runs all 4 of our tanks (3 saltwater that my hubby runs and my freshwater planted tank). I can see at a glance my PH, dosers, and uv on and off, etc. This also manages our CO2, 2nd plant light (the first is a 24-hr programmed light), and the water replenishment system. NOTE: C02 on a sump is very lossy, but as you can see - my plants are thriving. I replace my 5 gal C02 approx every 6 months.

Our water here is very hard and has over 800 TDS, so we start with RODI fills, add the minerals we need, and top off with RO water (all automagically). To keep the tank water clean and fresh, the system removes 8 gal of water gradually throughout the day and replaces it with RODI.

To keep the water sanitized, we also have a part-day UV going. That also helps keep algae away and minimizes disease. I have no need for carbon. In our cubby under the stairs, we store supplies, the saltwater frag tank, CO2 and water change systems, and RO and RODI systems (which fill 50 gallon trash cans - one RO, one RODI, and one RODI Salt.

This tank was built on ADA powersand, Amazonia, gravel, river stones, and seiryu stone (which was treated with muriatic acid and sealed with zoopoly) and there is a driftwood bonsai in there too, which I alternately boiled and soaked to remove tannins over around 10 days. I occasionally add iron to brighten up the reds, I feed the fish, remove snail eggs, trim and replant stems, and change socks and filter pad. Every 6 months or so I add fertilizer pellets to replenish the soil that's been depleted. That's it. The rest is automation magic. Lights ramp up, UV turns on, C02 comes on, then C02 shuts off, UV shuts off, then lights ramp down. Any ?? let me know below!
