Nursing a Goldfish - Ethical Quandries

Posted: 09 Jun 2022 02:31 PM PDT

Hello, everyone!

I'll start by saying that I'm a nano species guy. I only keep "tropicals". I have a 10 gallon with pygmy cories, a 20 gallon with a single betta, and a 40 gallon with cories and neons. I have kept livebearers and invertebrates as well, but never goldfish or any other "cold-water" fish.

I will spare you the very long story by just saying that I am nursing a goldfish from a badly neglected aquaponics situation. The person who has ended up in charge of it knows next to nothing about fish. They have about a 2,000 gallon system and two 300 gallon stock tanks that house a total of 11 adult fantail goldfish.

I noticed that one of them was having a lot of trouble swimming and it looked like a swim bladder issue to me. I tested their water and found that the ammonia was around 1.5 and the nitrates were completely off the charts. The pH was also off the API "high pH" chart.

I recommended an immediate water change and quarantining the ailing fish. I found out that they do not have the capability to drain the system. They never built that into the plumbing. It has been over a year since a water change has been performed. They also have no medication and no hospital tank. The fish also live entirely in the dark.

I cobbled together a hose siphon system and helped them perform a water change and ended up taking the ill fish home with me. The largest container I have on hand is a 35 and he is in that for the time being.

I immediately began a salt treatment and started slowly introducing him to light. I am fasting him every other day because they seem overfed. He is eating peas, bloodworms, and high quality betta pellets.

I treated him with paracleanse with no effect.

He seems to have improved slightly over the week that I have had him, but he still swims poorly when he is excited. He is overly buoyant in his back end and tends to float. Before, he was floating nearly on his side.

He has a twisted spine toward his tail and his fins have some sort of deformity where there are thickened in parts. I believe these may be scars from a chunk of dead coral they had thrown in the tank for some ungodly reason.

Now, my wife--who has insisted that I can't have any more tanks!--doesn't want to give Melvin back (yes, she named him).

While I completely agree with her ethical protests, Melvin is not our fish. We do not have a tank large enough for Melvin. Melvin needs friends.

I am wanting to set up an outdoor pond at some point in the next year, but it will only be a 110 gallon stock pond and I don't think that would be enough for a 7" fantail and a few friends. I also don't think he would be able to avoid predators outdoors with his swimming issue.

Is there anything else we can do for Melvin? I would like to improve his health before he is returned and I'm not 100% opposed to finding some way to give him a better life with us, I just don't think we can.

For the record, improving the conditions for the goldfish still at the facility is outside of my control. I have told them to get a light for them, to set up a solution for regular water changes, and to regularly test their water. This is as much as I can get them to agree to. I also dredged about 50 lbs of muck from the bottom of the tanks.

Melvin and I appreciate any guidance you may have.

Can someone help identify this sore and what I can do about it? I assume it’s fairly new I just noticed it now. This one likes to hang amongst the plastic plants.

K&E B2040 SANDBLASTING SAND

Posted: 09 Jun 2022 02:13 PM PDT

https://www.peaveymart.com/tools-welding/sandblasting/sandblasting-supplies/50lb-ke-b2040-sandblasting-sand/342912 Would this sand be ok for fancy goldfish. It seems like it might be sharp so I don't want it to cut the mouth of the fish when they sift through it.

Inheriting a goldfish need advice !

My flatmate is moving out and gifting me her lovely black Moore goldfish Lola, I've never owned goldfish before and would love some advice as I've only ever had tetras ! I've read online they should be kept in pairs , is it too late to get her a friend as she's about 6 months now. And if I should get another fish, any specific breeds ? Is there any type of plants or decoration I should avoid, or any that you'd recommend ? I just need some advice to make Lola as happy as possible !

I've gotten mixed opinions on if sand is safe for fancy goldfish. I am going to get 2 ranchus and a pearlscale and I want to know if sand is safe.
