need some help, our axolotl is only 8 months or so. We have done a bunch of research but are still a little new to everything and are worried that he may have a prolapse? anyone have any idea what this could be? I've been checking in once an hour with him since I saw it.

Axolotl gills

Posted: 31 May 2022 10:11 AM PDT

My axolotl Beans came pretty bent out of shape from Fantaxies (I do not recommend.) He started growing into his gills recently but one stalk has not grown. Due to his behavior and body oddities I'm assuming he was housed with others. He seems to be doing good he doesn't move all that much compared to my other axxie but he shows no signs of stress. However I'm still worried, will the stunted gill affect him in the future?

Urgent: any experienced breeders in the Baltimore area who'd be willing to take some eggs? They come from a golden albino/copper pairing that happened accidentally when I thought they were both males, and I feel bad getting rid of the eggs but I can't raise them myself since I'm moving soon.

Might need to tub, advice appreciated!

Posted: 31 May 2022 11:09 AM PDT

Our AC is being wonky and our house is much warmer than we usually keep it. Though only 4 degrees warmer than our usual tank temp, I'm afraid our AC might completely break and our tank temp could shoot up. I know in an emergency or if quarantining, tubbing an axolotl can be really useful! I want to know how I would go about that in case the worst does happen. I have 3 axolotls, and the fridge I'd likely be using is a fridge we generally use to keep soda cold. Do I need to make sure the temp in the fridge is a particular temp? It will probably be stressful being tubbed so should I leave rocks in the tub so they feel they can hide, or should I change how I feed them while they're tubbed? Anything is very appreciated.

Edit: we cranked up the window AC unit next to the tank and the tank is very slowly cooling down. About .1 degrees in the past hour.

Help with cycling a tank

Posted: 31 May 2022 09:26 AM PDT

We got our little rescue axolotl 6 months ago, we started cycling our tank before we got him and gave the rescue regular updates on our tank, the rescue said our tank is almost ready so could come and collect him and keep him in a separate tub with daily water changes and the correct drops until his tank is ready… 6 months later and we cannot get our ammonia levels down even though our kit is showing the correct levels of nitrates and nitrates, we have tried different testing kits and many water changes as well as starting again completely and still having the same problems, does anyone have any advice as we are starting to feel disheartening and just want our little guy in his forever home.

It was a stressful weekend as the AC was out and I had to keep switching out ice water bottles as the chiller was having a hard time keeping up, but now that it’s back on Mr. Lotl is a happy boi

Can an axolotl go 2 weeks without a water change

Posted: 31 May 2022 04:19 AM PDT

Alright so I have an axolotl in a 10 gallon tank, I usually do a 30 percent water change once a week, will it be ok if he goes 2 weeks without a water change as I may have to go out of town for a two weeks, The neighbors are happy to feed him and remove any poop and whatnot I was just concerned about the water quality. Any advice would be helpful

I need a second opinion. Here's my axolotl's little balls. Male or female? Over a year old.

axolotl looks like he is cough/gagging?

Posted: 30 May 2022 05:20 PM PDT

So my axolotl had a fungus infection about a week ago and since then he is doing a lot better and eating again. His gills basically fell off but since treating him daily and he has looked a lot better and appears to be on the mend. He is still in the hospital tank with dechlorinated water and daily water changes.

Recently though, he has been doing this odd thing where he looks like he is coughing or gagging whenever I change the water and now when I feed him. He's been getting a single one inch piece of nightcrawler since he started eating again. He has ate successfully 4 times since being sick. He also does this after coming up to the surface for air. He tends to do it a lot during water changes then he stops even though I do everything possible to acclimate him. He also kind of squirms backwards and doesn't look comfortable when this happens. The other thing I noticed is I have not seen a bowel movement in a few days. I am not sure if that might have to do with this either.

Can someone try to explain this behavior to me? I've had him for 6 months and have never experienced this.
