Meet Sundrop! My new Golden Albino!

Bucket is the goofiest lotl I’ve ever seen. He’s super active. Loves attention. And throws a fit when he doesn’t get worm.

Small amount of aquarium salt in tank = fungus prevention?

Posted: 29 May 2022 05:46 AM PDT

My axolotl Zilla is an unfortunate girl in that she always gets a small fungal growth on one specific, not-quite-normal gill every couple of weeks, despite her parameters being great. Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 10-20, temp a constant 63 (with chiller) and ph 8. Tank is 40 gal with very fine layer of sand, less than 1/2 an inch.

The fungus always comes off pretty easily once I give her gill a few puffs with a turkey baster, and then I just suck it up. I dose her tank with the "juices" of boiled indian almond leaves regularly and this has made the fungus grow back more slowly but hasn't eradicated it altogether.

I'd like to stop the fungus from returning at all in the first place, and I've heard here and there that adding one tsp of aquarium salt per gallon will keep fungus away? Just curious to know if anyone here doses salt in their axolotl aquarium and what their take is. I know axolotls don't appreciate salt in general but I'm hoping there's a line between enough salt to stop fungus without upsetting the axolotl?

Can't tell if the sand is binding to their slime coat or if it's skin? :/

UK axolotl pellets

Posted: 29 May 2022 04:14 AM PDT

Hi all, I've recently acquired an axolotl from a friend. He's around 5 years old and has always been fed frozen bloodworm cubes up until now. I've read on here that I should feed him some pellets. Just wondering where UK axolotl owners source their pellets, and are there any brands that are better than others? Thanks.

He didn't make it

I decided to make a post to understand what happened to my axolotl. So this is a follow up to the post here.

After making the original post, i moved the tank to a colder place and used a fan on the surface of the water to keep the tank on a stable 20ªc. Then i managed to get test stripes to check for water conditions and after realizing that the pads for Nitrites and Nitrates didn't work (the pads didn't change colors), I tried to get an API Water Test kit (something that is not easy to find where i live). Although some information from the stripes did came up helpful like Ph, Water hardness and Alkalinity which all three were too high for comfort. After the initial testing i started to do regular water changes with RO water to get the mineral content of the water to a reasonable level (closer to a ph on the low 8's), that seemed to stop the curling of the original post.

Once i got a proper water test kit, the results didn't gave any obvious signs of danger:

  • Before RO: Ph: 8-8.5, Ammonia: 0.25-0.5 ppm, Nitrite: 0 ppm, Nitrate: 0-5 ppm, Alkalinity: 300-720ppm, Water Hardness: 1000 ppm
  • After RO (regular refills about a gallon per week, additional to the water change): Ph: 8, Ammonia: 0-0.25 ppm, Nitrite: 0 ppm, Nitrate: 0 ppm, Alkalinity: 300-720ppm, Water Hardness: 1000 ppm

The tank was a 29 gallon planted and it did have neocaridina shrimps in it along side the axolotl (i didn't used fertilizers as some might have poisonous compounds for both)

As for the behavior of the axolotl, it was active and from time to time it got annoyed of the shrimps getting on its back, but most of the time it was climbing the driftwood or standing on top of the plants and when it came the time to eat it always was quick to catch the food.

For food i gave him small live worms as it was still too small for the adult ones. He ate one of these every night

After a while it started presenting inflammation near its cloaca but not from its intestines but rather from a transparent "ball" below the skin after the initial search of what this could be, i came up empty handed, the most i could find was a discussion leading to a deleted forum post that seemed to indicate that it was benign but didn't explained what it was in the first time. It didn't change its behavior on any noticeable way so i didn't knew what to do other than regular maintenance and hope for the best.

After about a month, one day it started floating (with its head near the surface) with barely any signs of activity, when i reached to call its attention it barely moved and didn't wanted to eat, quickly cleaned the quarantine tank and isolated the Axolotl on it, acclimating the axolotl for over an hour to prevent any kind of shock, the axolotl was a little bit more active the following days and stopped floating but every time i gave it food (once every two days) it didn't want to take it. Today its a week after the initial quarantine and i woke up to a dead Axolotl, after some water tests it seems like the filter was not big enough to handle the axolotl's bio load (Ammonia: 0.5 ppm) or the Axolotl died during the night. Anyway i don't have any idea of what happened to him, what was the tumor?, why it suddenly became lethargic? or why its tail never healed?

This is my first time taking care of an axolotl and i really don't know what happened, please help.
