Sponge media in filter expanding?

Is it normal for the Sponge filter in my filter (30L cube nanotank with built in housing inside the tank for filter and drop in heater) to expand to the point where it's pushing my other filter media and the lid off?

Is it just a case of periodically squeezing it out and putting it back?
