PH was 7.2, Ammonia 0.2, nitrites 0, nitrates 10.. is it possible he was just sick when I got him a month ago? [link] [comments]
New to the aquarium world. Need advice, please be kind Posted: 19 Oct 2021 08:45 PM PDT I have 4 comet goldfish, 1 plecostamus, and some tiger eye nerite snails in a 40 gallons tank. I have several (12) plants currently and 16 on the way. I feed every other day, bit am struggling with keeping ammonia levels down. I try to do partial changes when I can, but I am a new mom so I don't have a lot of time anymore for stuff until my husband gets home from work. I also have ammo lock and quick start as well as the conditioner that gets rid of chlorine. I changes the filter 1 month ago because we moved. Im not sure what else there is to address. Please help me. [link] [comments]
I just got an air stone for my goldfish and it seems to be stressing them out. Advice? Posted: 19 Oct 2021 04:04 PM PDT Should I turn it off for a bit and slowly have it on for longer periods? The air pump has two air outlets but I only have one connected so it's kinda loud. Or should I just take it out and wait until I get my bigger tank? Also is there any way to turn down the power on these filters, I bought the aqua culture 20-60 gallon double outlet pump. [link] [comments]

Posted: 19 Oct 2021 10:39 PM PDT I have a 55 gal tank that was used for keeping only 3 angelfishes and some large anubias plants with just very fine sand as substrates. I have used aquaclear 110 and 2 large sponge filters. It was not the elegant tank but the angelfishes were happy and grew from about a quarter size to around 6-7inches. It was pretty bare tank with just 3 fishes and 3 filters and aquaclear 110 was most likely an overkill and I had to do some modification so that the outflow was not as strong (angelfishes avoided half of the tank till i modified the filter). The tank has been fully cleared and have given the fishes away to a friend who has 125gal tank that was recently cycled and plan to keep just angelfishes as well (he plans to add more angel fishes in there). Now I am left with aquaclear 110, 2 large sponge filters (they are in 10 gal tank to keep the bacteria in the filter alive with left over fish foods). I've been very interested in goldfishes and have read and watched many videos on the guide on keeping goldfish tank clean and appropriate for them. However, I cannot reuse aquaclear 110 as the impeller was wonky even after numerous attempts at fixing it. So now I am left with just 2 large sponge filters. Based on what I have learned, goldfishes are very 'dirty' fishes with a lot of waste. While my two large sponge filters (6in tall, about 5 in wide) can handle biological load, I will need a new HOB filter for mechanical filtration (poop, left over food, etc). While visiting local fish store for advice, I impulsively purchased 3, 2in long veiltail goldfish as their brilliant gold color just captured my attention and left me in awe at their color. They are currently in 20 gal long quarantine tank with one of the two large sponge filters. It took some adjustment with the air output so that it did not give the little ones difficulties with swimming around but I managed to find the sweet spot. I got them this morning, and as I am about to go to sleep, I took a look at the tank and there were a lot of poops on the bottom. I quickly checked for ammonia, nitrate, nitrite levels and they were all normal (using the API kits). I'd say the large sponge filter with the bacteria inside was doing the job well for those 3 small goldfishes. But now I am seriously concerned about the poops on the floor. My plan for the 55 gal tank is, 1 HOB, with 2 large sponge filters to handle biofiltration and mechanical filtration. Then there's BIG BUT! These little guys, while they may grow fast, I've been reading about how fancy gold fishes like veiltail goldfishes don't like strong currents. Goldfishes in general but especially fancy ones, each having their own reasons. Now I am stuck on mechanical filtration part because of the strong outflow. I prefer to keep the cost low so HOB is what I plan to go with instead of external canister. As of right now, I am looking at Seachem Tidal 55 or 75 as it as valve control for the water flow. But the intake pipe doesn't seem to go far down (from pictures and videos, only about 1/2 way down, 2/3 in some pictures). Then I'm also worried about HOB only circulating half of the tank that it is sitting on. I've thought about few other options like changing the placement of the HOB to the side, instead of the back, so that the outflow will go all the way to the other side of the wall, flow downward, that come back to the intake with detritus or other things. That sounds viable but to run that circular current, I would need to have strong outflow which would prevent veiltails from swimming to the top and get dragged away by the current. I've seen many smaller setups (<35gal) and larger setups (75gal +) but not one at 55gal with bare bottom, running sponge filters and a HOB. As I just got he veiltails today, in quarantine tank for next 10 days at least, I am hoping to receive advice on recommended HOB and even the placement of large sponge filters in the mean time. I will admit that impulsive buy without the tank set up was a poor idea. But as they were small and and gorgeous, there were few people who were also looking to buy them if I walked away. So knowing that I have 20gal long with cycled sponge filters to handle bioload, I brought them home. Definitely the wrong way to go about this, as it the same for any fresh water fish, or even just aquatics, but I did not want to miss the chance for the veiltails that just captured my full attention. I am sorry that I bought the veiltail goldfishes before the main tank was fully ready. But I hope I can be given advice on HOB filter, the placement, and potential modifications so that they can be happy in the 55 gal tank. Thank you. [link] [comments]

my goldfish are sitting at the bottom please help Posted: 19 Oct 2021 11:58 AM PDT I have 3 goldfish, lately 2 have just been sitting at the bottom of the tank. I just changed the water and they were fine for about 10 minutes then started doing it again. They look fine appearence wise, they also come to eat when I can get their attention. Any advice? My goldfish won’t eat his food Posted: 19 Oct 2021 08:36 PM PDT It sinks to the bottom and he seems interested, but when it touches the ground he swims away. I just got him today and he is still getting acclimated to his tank. The ground rocks are similar colors to the food, but I don't think that's the problem. What should i do, should i get a new floating food? [link] [comments]
putting goldfish in a new tank Posted: 19 Oct 2021 09:57 AM PDT Recently a neighbour asked me to care for their goldfish for a few months while they are in Europe. When they dropped the goldfish off, I was surprised to see that the goldfish (about two inches long) was in a very small bowl. I don't know anything about goldfish but it seemed obvious to me that the bowl is too small for the fish. So I did some research and bought a small tank (3 gallons, I know it's still technically not big enough but it's the best I can do based on the space I'm living in) and set it up 2 days ago. The filter has been on since I set it up, but I haven't transferred the fish to it, right now he's just in the same bowl beside the tank. I am wondering if it is safe to just move him into the tank? I don't know anything about caring for fish, and everything I've read online talks about floating him in a bag in the tank water for a bit, but I don't have him in a bag to do that. Also any other advice on how to make life a little better for the fish would be greatly appreciated! [link] [comments]
Tips for choosing fancy goldfish? Posted: 19 Oct 2021 09:57 AM PDT What to consider? For a beginner, would you recommend older, established goldfish (4-6") or getting them as young as possible? Is it better to start with a pair, or with one fish and add a second later? Will the sex of the fish impact its care or personality - how are two males different from two females? I know to put at most 2 fancy goldfish in a species-only tank >= 45 gallons after it is cycled fish-less. [link] [comments]
