Ammonia problem.. 15 fish.. should I reduce the amount? I tried 50 percent water change and adding prime sheam but ammonia won’t budge. My tap water is at .50ppm. Should I add substrate? Any suggestions?

College giving away goldfish as prizes - please advise

Posted: 09 Oct 2021 10:32 PM PDT

I go to a small college and they made the horrible choice to give away live goldfish as prizes for a game night. The only two options in that scenario is fish abuse or saddling a broke college student with a responsibility they did not plan for, so I do not know why they ever thought it was a good idea. They bought DOZENS. Not to mention, the largest tank they'll let you have in a dorm is a 10 gallon.

I know this kind of abuse is bound to happen, but I wanted to do what I can to minimize damage somehow. They gave away care packets to the students, which weren't too terrible (they talked about water changes, temperature, feeding, and finally recommended they do their own research, but ultimately never gave a tank size), but I doubt any students will be able to properly take on this responsibility. Not only this - they have about a dozen fish left over. I'm wondering if anyone has advice on what to do.

Here are my options (for context, I already have a 10 gal tank with a betta in my dorm): a) I do nothing and let the fish die b) I try to take a couple and get another fish setup, which means spending money I don't have and needing to make the choice between following college dorm policy and getting them the proper size tank (which I also don't have space for) or c) take them all... I don't even know what to do in that situation.

Also, I'm home for the weekend so I can't do anything until tomorrow night and to be honest I'm not sure they'll last that long.

I was hoping I could at least get some advice from people who know more about goldfish on the best course of action. I'm more of a betta fish keeper but ultimately I want to do what I can to reduce fish abuse.

Pearlscale disaster

Posted: 09 Oct 2021 07:52 AM PDT

Hi all, I have 3 fancy goldfish in a large tank, this morning my fat pearl scale Herbert got stuck in the hardscaping of the tank and scraped about half his scales off, I totally panicked and I thought he was dead, but I freed him and he seems Ok but looks a total mess, I removed the bogwood he got stuck on and it is in the bin. Is there anything I can do to help him heal and grow his scales back and is he at risk of infection or disease now?

He is very fat and greedy and is about 3 times the size of the other fish when I designed the tank he fitted past everything easily but he had grown so large he just got stuck, I feel awful and I want to help him get better.

Is this fin rot? Or some kind of growth?

I noticed people were posting pics of their fishe, so I wanted to post some pics I have of Murky Brumblesnout, one of my shubunkin. Apologies for bad quality.

Are these eggs infertile? Noticed breeding behaviour recently.

Rescaping Questions

Posted: 09 Oct 2021 09:38 AM PDT

So, I've just started rescaping my 75g tank by adding some nice black substrate which the fish really seem to enjoy now and I'm wondering about adding rocks. I know rocks can be risky adding into a tank since they can alter ph levels in the water but I'm wondering how I can add them in while acclimating my fish to the new ph levels in the water. I would love to have some smooth beach stones circling around some plants which would give of the minimalist look I've been wanting since starting this tank.

Edit: I actually forgot, but I'm hoping to add a few of these rocks (https://www.homedepot.com/p/Vigoro-0-4-cu-ft-Bagged-Mexican-Beach-Pebbles-HDMBP3-30/205655524#product-overview) anyone have suggestions? Warnings? About them?
