Betta Fish Aquariums - Experts who aren't actually experts

Experts who aren't actually experts

In recent weeks, we've had multiple users begin giving advice as veterinarians or other professionals with seemingly impressive credentials to back this advice up. The mod team has reached out to these people and asked them to either provide proof of those credentials, or to stop marketing themselves as experts without evidence to support it. This was in part due to how questionable portions of their advice had been.

One user in question did respond with a certification and a few journal articles they claimed to have authored. The issue was, the information provided in those resources didn't match the information in their post history and the images even looked as if they had been edited to be someone else. I personally went so far as to contact the person who this individual claimed to be on LinkedIn with my real account just to verify the validity of their statements and never got a reply.

I also want to note that of the journal articles they provided, their advice/arguments didn't actually even match the fundamental point of the articles and much of what they shared was irrelevant to the advice they were offering and using said articles to seemingly support.

One particular user was banned from our community for this behavior before it was ultimately escalated to the Reddit admins as they began creating alternate accounts to circumvent the bans, an action that is a violation of the Reddit Content Policy (see rule 2).

I say all of this to ask everyone to look beyond the surface on who you take advice from. Everyone has an opinion but not every suggestion is right and some are even outright dangerous. The betta care guide we have developed (and we're in the process of revising) is the product of tons of research across the hobby and is even informed by emerging research, including peer-reviewed journal articles. We take the quality of information being shared in the community very seriously and understand the dangers of misinformation. When in doubt, you're always welcome to ping myself (add u/roboto6) or another mod on a thread to get a second opinion on what someone is saying. We may not always know the right answer but we can usually still tell you if someone is totally wrong.

Is it ok that my King betta lives in a 5 1/2 gallon? I didn’t know they recommended ten gallons for Kings until now. He seems to be doing great though:

Our last Betta did great with our fish. After he died we introduced this serial killer to our tank. We watched him for an hour and he did fine. In the morning ALL of our other fish were dead with their eyes plucked out! Any breads less aggressive? Any tips?

Gifted a betta on Sunday for ordaining a friends wedding. No clue what I'm doing! Done a lot of research but still nervous. Is this an okay set up? Will he be okay until payday or do I need to get him anything asap?

Just redecorated my tank and water is super cloudy. It's been about 2-3 days, and it's gotten slightly better. Anybody know what's causing it? ( More info in comments)

i’m wanting to start a betta tank and have a couple of questions!

Posted: 19 Oct 2021 10:53 AM PDT

i know the tank minimum for generic betta, and i've done my research on tank styles, heaters, and setups, but i was curious as to if any of y'all have a pleco living in your betta tank? and if so, how do you feed it while ensuring your betta won't gorge and choke up or anything else? i know they can co-habitate (if the betta isn't especially aggressive) but i've heard lots of stories of betta gorging on algae wafers and getting sick.
