How to set up a tank with aquarium sand?

Posted: 13 Oct 2021 10:09 AM PDT

I've had my axolotl for over 4 years now, he's been in a bare bottom tank with plenty of silk plants and hides and such. At the time I could only afford plants that were safe....however they look really ugly so I finally bought some new ones. I also did more research and invested in some expensive, yet safe aquarium sand so the plants would look more real plus I think my boy would enjoy the enrichment of the sand. Seeing as I've had only tile/bare bottom before.

I've also had many gravel fish tanks over the years so and not really sure how one goes about prepping the tank for sand...

Does it need to be rinsed in a backet to get dust off first? When taking everything out of the tank and back in again. Do I put lay the sand down first or the water first?

And worried it'll be a big dirty mess and my boy will be stressing in a tub for longer than needed.

What room do you keep your axolotl in?

Posted: 13 Oct 2021 02:55 AM PDT

Hiya! I'm looking to (finally!) get an axolotl after wanting one for many years. I have a brilliant 25 gallon tank positioned in a corner of the living room.

I know axolotls can stress quite easily. Problem is, the living room is the only place I can keep the tank. Is a living room too "busy" for an axolotl, or will they adjust? We don't have little kids running around screaming or anything like that - just a dog that likes to sleep a ton, and my mother-in-law spends about 5 hours watching TV in the living room.

My Axolotl’s gill has turned this weird shade of white and has me concerned, is there anything I can do to remedy this? Temp currently is 67.6 degreesF, I use frozen water bottles to chill but have a fan coming in the mail

White spots on axolotl tail

Posted: 12 Oct 2021 05:41 PM PDT

So my axolotl has developed white spots on his tail and I was just wondering if it's a sign of sickness, or fungus.

Water changes are stressing my axie

Posted: 12 Oct 2021 04:14 PM PDT

My axolotl really doesn't like water changes, I do one 35% change a week (30% + 5% to deal with evaporation) He gets really stressed and doesn't eat after them. He always has low movement after them to, and he seems like he is anxious. My parameters are pretty average 10- a bit over 20 Nitrate, 0 ammonia, 0 Nitrite, 7PH, temp: 64-66 Fahrenheit. What can I do to make them less stressful for him?
