Just chilling :)

Meet Chilli, technically he's my Grand-lotl as I bought him for my 8 year old son's birthday recently, but I provide all of his care and upkeep, my son basically just gets to bask in his cuteness. He's sassy, curious, and we've all fallen in love with him :)

I'm posting here instead of aquariums as pretty much all my issues come from needing to keep the water cold enough for my axolotl!

I'm moving, I'm very house proud. I'm happy to spend a bit to get a nice glass tank that doesn't have that ugly black rim. however I cannot afford a chiller and except for winter I have to have a desk fan blowing across the top.

This causes constant evaporation and the line scale build up gets unmanageable so quickly. A desk fan on top of a book is also super ugly and cluttered. I bought some Amazon tank fans but they wouldn't bend enough so they were actually blowing onto the water enough to cool it.

Any photos of pretty lotl tank set ups would be much appreciated!

Sand Hack!

Posted: 16 Oct 2021 10:30 PM PDT

Hi all, people might already do this and I'm late to the game but! Thought I'd post here anyway just in case! I upgraded to a new tank and thanks to quarantine, pet stores had supply issues getting silica sand in so I was bare for a bit - finally got some and was prepared for the arduous washing of it all and decided to try engineer something to make it quicker and easier! SO! I cut a 1.5L clean fizzy bottle in half and then made holes in the bottom, then I cut the legs off a pair of clean pantyhose and stretched it over the rim of the bottle. I put my seive on top to catch the bigger particles, and put it in the sink under the tap. I then poured the sand slowly in with water then once it was full I let the water continue to run over it while I stirred it with a chopstick until it was running clear. Once that was done, I pulled the pantyhose out and squeezed it to get some excess water out, then popped it in a bucket of treated water for a few hours before pulling it out and then putting the sock into the tank, slowly pinching and pulling the foot end up until all the sand was settled neatly on the bottom! No cloudiness at all in the water as the sand was contained till it hit the bottom! Hope this helps people!
