| Posted: 05 Jun 2021 12:36 AM PDT I have had this new tank for around 5 weeks now, and all ammonia, nitrites and nitrates dropped to 0 last week, leading me to beleive that the tank was cycled. However for the last 5 or so days, the ammonia has risen to just below 0.25, and has remained this way since despite water changes. All other levels have remained 0. Is this normal, and is it safe to be adding shrimp when the tank is like this? Thanks. [link] [comments] | ||
| Posted: 04 Jun 2021 11:48 PM PDT So kinda bummed and discouraged, trying to sort out a "why?" so it doesn't happen again. Background: I've had a small ~3 gallon walstad going since December and added shrimp to it a couple months back. I did a 50% water change this Tuesday after about 1.5 weeks since the last one and then a day after on Wednesday I added a 3" portion of Indian Almond Leaf as I wanted to introduce some tannins and some more places for biofilm to develop. The leaves were bought from Josh's Frogs a while back originally for some use with other invertebrates and I don't think I've had issues with them before, but this is the first aquarium I've tried them in. Friday I woke up to all but one of my shrimp dead near the front of my tank across from where the leaf was. I took the shrimp out and the leaf cos that's the only new thing I had in the tank. I checked the parameters and all of those were still good. Then, even stranger, about 10 minutes later the hand I used to tweeze out the shrimp and pull the leaf out broke out in hives? So I'm baffled, what could have gone wrong? How can I prevent this in the future before I consider more shrimp? My two nerite snails are still seemingly fine. Any thoughts on what happened? Did I miss something obvious? [link] [comments] |
