Importance of substrate/lighting/ferts question Posted: 13 Jun 2021 05:25 AM PDT I'll preface this by saying I'm a beginner with no plants in any of my aquariums. Had a failed attempt in a 125gal that went well for a while but ultimately algae took over. Would love to hear substrate recommendations. My 125 and 10 both just have a gravel substrate. Plants would be going in the 10. I've thought about sand with a layer of gravel, I've thought about potting soil with a layer of gravel, I've thought about fluval stratum with or without a layer of gravel. Is soil or stratum in a low tech setup overkill/asking for algae issues? My light is a nicrew RGB plus, the 12"-18" model. I can't find par data for it but it's 11W. I know they aren't the best lights but I'm hoping it's good enough? Java ferns, ludwigia, anubias, hygrophila, dwarf hairgrass are all candidates for the tank. Can this light support these plants, and again what kind of substrate will give me the easiest time with maintenance/nutrients/planting? I do already have liquid fertilizers on hand (K, Fe, Flourish) - but the tank's only occupant is a large Betta. Will I need N and P too? How important is it for these guys to get nutrients from roots/substrate when there is regular water column fertilization? [link] [comments] | ||
