What's the general attitude around buying from breeders?

Posted: 22 Jun 2021 04:29 PM PDT

I started the month of June planning to get a few feeders for my new 75g and watch them grow and thrive. Now I have four fancy ranchus in my online shopping cart and they're more than my car payment. Ranchus used to be my least favorite "morph" (I have snakes) of goldfish, but it's a situation where I can't look away and now they're my favorite. They're like little walrus scooting around.

I like the breeder because I can select exactly which fish I want, and I know it's healthy and it's been sexed accurately. I would get a female and two males and if there is any spawning going on I'd see what I could do with that.

Is there a reason not to buy from a breeder? Obviously they're not as tiny and young as I'd get at Petco or whatever.

I could just as easily get four fancies at my LFS for $15 that will be smaller and be interesting to watch grow. So this may be a waste of money, I've just become addicted.

Fish eating the bubbles coming out of my air pumps. Normal behaviour?

Posted: 22 Jun 2021 10:30 PM PDT

A couple of my fishes go up to the surface and munch on the bubbles, then they spit them out usually.

But can it cause buoyancy issues or anything? Could it be harmful for them to swallow bubbles?

If so, what can I do for the bubbles on the surface, because air pumps are necessary. Total noob, thanks for any help.

Is this the onset of HITH?

Posted: 22 Jun 2021 02:30 PM PDT

Hello! Could this be the onset of Hole in the head disease? I have tried looking up information but cannot find anything that shows what early stages will look like, only very advanced stages.

Some info on my buddy Marn

30 gal planted tank been set up for almost 2 years now (have had Marn for almost 5 years total) Only friends he has are a dozen or so Ramshorn snails (been in the tank since it was set up)

params- ammo (0) nitrite (0) nitrate (20~30) unsure of my ph at the moment, can double check later tonight. last I remember it was at 7.3~

Nothing new was added or changed in the past year, same food brand as always (omega one sinking pellets and some fresh greens veggies once a week or so)

I worry mainly because he has been acting odd recently. Still has an appetite, but seems to want to sit in the corner often and has been flashing occasionally which isn't like him. He has also dropped a few scales (2 on one side you can slightly see in the picture and one scale on the opposite side of his body, same general location) I'm unsure if the scale dropping is related or if he is injuring himself on a decoration.

If this is indeed HITH is there anything I can do?

Sorry if formatting is terrible, currently on mobile.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Doing Salt Treatment for the First Time

Posted: 22 Jun 2021 04:33 PM PDT

I have one common who might have columnaris or tetanus. I'm not really sure what's up and she seems as alert and healthy as usual so I don't want to attempt anything drastic. So I may try salt dips. I know how to do a typical salt dip, but this goldfish has never had any exposure to salt and she also seems to be missing a scale or two — I'm not sure what happened other than she was in very poor living conditions prior to being handed off to me. Any advice is appreciated, thank you in advance!

Goldfish diet help - Likely obscure question.

Posted: 22 Jun 2021 03:50 PM PDT

I was wondering if I would be able to feed my goldfish live worms I've found in my yard. I've been feeding it flakes for about 3 years and for about 6 months of that I also used shrimp and pellets.

Concerned about this soft fleshy lump on the side of my female black moor, one morning I noticed she was missing a scale on her side, then over the past year this mass has slowly grown, she doesn't seemed bothered by it but I know that's not Normal, anyone know what's going on?

The white circles were not there at lights out, 9PM. I don't see them anywhere else in the tank. Any thoughts on what they are?

New Goldfish Pond Test Results

Posted: 22 Jun 2021 09:47 AM PDT

Just tested the water of my pond with API Master Test Kit:

PH ~ 8.0

AMMONIA ~ .25-.50

NITRITE ~ .25-.50 - EDIT: Nitrite is the one people are concerned with on Facebook, I am considering doing a 25% Water change immediately after I get some more opinions

NITRATE ~ 0.0-5.0

The Pond was built about 3 weeks ago and the Goldfish were added 5 days ago. This is my first pond and I am wondering if there are any concerns with those Test Levels. Also is there any other recommendations to help those levels. THANK YOU VERY MUCH! I really like these fish and want them to have a nice life!

I can't figure this out. I see a lot with big blobs of red, so it's not just white with black spots.

Any luck growing green carpet algae?

Posted: 22 Jun 2021 05:58 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I'm trying to grow green carpet algae and I'm still at the earliest stage.

Just curious if anyone here has had great luck growing them? I'd like some pointers or tips if can.

Some info about my tank:

It's a 2.5 ft tank, bare bottom setup with 3 ranchu in it. Tank is situated next to my bedroom window but the window is pretty high up so it doesn't get direct sunlight. I keep the LED light on for 8-10 hrs a day. I am also in the middle of growing my ranchu, so I feed them 3-4 times a day and will slowly increase to 5 times. Doing partial water change of 20% every other day and weekly water change of 50%.

Question is, with the amount of water changes that I do, will it affect the algae growth? I do not brush the surface, the side and the back of the tank though, just the front.
