PSA - STOP CHANGING YOUR FILTER MEDIA Posted: 24 Jun 2021 12:23 PM PDT Hello fellow goldfish lovers, I am Chelly, I have owned goldfish for 25 years and am completely obsessed with them. Please, please, please, stop changing your filter pads, your bags, your whatever's in your whatever filters that they tell you to change with the only exception being activated carbon which should be changed regularly, and I would personally recommend not having in a goldfish tank at all. If you buy cartridge's cut them open and remove the carbon before putting them in your filter. You never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever want to change any of your filter materials. You want to remove them when needed and wash them in a bucket of old aquarium water, never use tap water to do this, in an absolute pinch you can condition tap water and use that to clean them, but I would avoid even that. Once most of the gunk is clear of the filter material just put it back and ignore it for another month, year, whatever. I have a guppy aquarium that i literally almost never check the filter unless the flow rate seems low, so maybe sometime last year i looked at it and cleaned it in old aquarium water. Unless your filter material is literally falling apart and you cannot clean it you should never throw it out, and if it gets to this point you want to add new material and wait a week or two and then remove the old filter media once the cycle is established in the new media. I have responded to so many threads lately about dead or dying fish and people saying "i changed my water and replaced my filter" you are throwing away your good bacteria, nuking your cycle, and killing your fish by doing this, or at the very least it creates stress as the tanks bacteria colony catches back up. Old, dirty, gross filter material is perfect and you should cherish it like its a treasure. I dont care what your manufacturer told you on your filter information insert, i don't care what bob at the aquarium store told you, I don't care what julie with a tropical aquarium told you, please stop hurting your fishes with your well meaning care, and leave your filters alone <3 Thank you! Edit: if you are downvoting this post I would LOVE to know why, because this is solid advice and I would be interested to hear any arguments against it. [link] [comments]

Posted: 24 Jun 2021 08:40 PM PDT Hi hi!! I keep seeing these gorgeous ponds/tubs(?) for goldfish outdoors and I really wanted to give mine more room like that. I was wondering if I could do something similar if I live in Texas. It gets pretty hot and I don't want them to be uncomfortable especially if they're so sensitive to temperature fluctuations. So if anything at all maybe something below ground/not metal or black? I keep reading about this but I couldn't find a temperature answer. [link] [comments]
Posted: 24 Jun 2021 04:24 PM PDT Recently, my mom's goldfish started growing this white stuff on his head (not his mouth or eyes, literally his forehead) and I'm not sure if it's ick because it's not fluffy or moldy-looking or if it's some other disease that can be treated. The little guy is about a year and a half old. Not sure if I can provide a picture Edit: I could provide a photo through Instagram dms @almond_thehammie [link] [comments]
Any idea what this weird sore is? Posted: 24 Jun 2021 07:47 PM PDT Hello, I have a very well protected 1800 outdoor gallon pond in my yard with 10 young Oranda goldfish. I have been keeping fish for many years, but have never seen a sore like the one pictured. He's now in a seperate, cycled quarantine tank. The parameters in the pond based on an API Master Test Kit: Ammonia: 0ppm Nitrites: 0ppm Nitrates: 10 ppm Temp: Currently around 71-73 depending on the day (Summer temps) pH: ~8 due to algae growth during the summer I keep the salinity around 0.2-0.3% I feed them small amounts of varying foods every other day. Generally bloodworms, brineshrimp, repashy gold gel food, peas, broccoli, hikari goldfish pellets etc. No other fish are exhibiting signs of illness, skittishness, sores or lethargy. The fish with the sore is acting completely normal, and the sore appeared overnight. Please see this image to get a good idea of what the sore looks like: https://imgur.com/gallery/glOvoZF It seems to have grown around a scale, pushing the scales surrounding it up. You can visibly see the scale underneath the fleshy redness. There is a scale that has curled over and turned black on the edges. It's such a weird wound. Any idea what this is? Is it a parasite or infection? Is there anything other than salt baths that I can give him to ensure his recovery? Thank you so much :) I did post this previously, but the sore has gotten even weirder, as seen in the pictures. I wanted to thank u/AzansBeautyStore for their help on their previous post!!
