What parts should I replace in my filter?

I've only had an axolotl tank but noticed how fast the filter can get dirty. I have an aqua clear 30. I know I can replace the sponge no problem but I've heard I should also replace the carbon but wouldn't that hurt the cycle? I need some help so I know what to replace or properly clean what I have. Thank you!

Sand or large pebbles?

Currently have large pebbles in my axo tank and he is having a hard time getting around. The pebbles are smooth and the paws seems to slide over them. Considering replacing with sand but am worried about it accidentally eating it. For those who use sand, have you had any problems? Would you recommend changing or staying with pebbles?

PS: the pebbles are 3x the size of the axo's mouth.

Hello, I posted a couple days ago asking for tips about axolotls as a new owner. I've been researching how, what, and when to feed them but im getting a lot of mixed results. I figured at least someone on this subreddit can help me out :)
