Canister filters

Posted: 10 Apr 2021 05:23 PM PDT

Pulled the trigger on a pair of fluval 307s for my 55 gallon. Filled one with the stock media assortment with added floss and the foam from the second. Second one is filled with lava rock and ceramic for the whole stack. On the bio filter obviously the foam will need rinsed occasionally, any need to ever rinse the rocks? Don't want to crash the cycle, my first time with canister filters.

Setting up a temporary home

Posted: 10 Apr 2021 10:39 AM PDT

Hello, everyone! I posted here a while ago abour the fish i found myself accidently owning. I got many super nice responses that helped a lot, so I'm back in need of more advice. My grandparents have a big house in a more rural area, so i talked to them about setting up a small fish lake there and its gonna happen!!! I couldn't be happier, but i know george (my fish) shouldn't stay in the 20L (5 gallon) tank he is till then. So i got a box I had at home to make a temporary home for him till the fish lake is ready. Its 17 gallons, which i know is still far from ideal, but its what i could set up the fastest and i believe since its temporary, it will work. Still, i've having a bunch of questions about setting it up. Its already been thoroughly washed (i did research and used only running water, white vinegar and salt, no soap whatsoever, dont worry!) and its full of conditioned water (i finally bought a water conditioner!). But now im super unsure about what to do. I got a filter meant for 17 gallons, since the one in the old aquarium is meant for max 10 gallons(both filters are hang on) and got some bio media. The main questions I have rn are:

• How do i do the cycling process? I know it may take long, and it makes me worried bc i wanna take george out of the 5 gallon tank asap. From what i read I can run the new filter in the old tank to accelerate it, but the thing is, i never really cycled the old tank? It was a very very stupid decision, i know, but i wasn't aware i needed to. Rn, he has been in there for a good while and the water parameters always come out ok (PH 7,2, ammonia 0ppm and nitrite 0ppm) when tested, so i assume its already cycled, even if i didnt mean to and it happend with george already in there. Is this correct?

• If I indeed should run the new filter in the old tank for a while, for how long? And after i put it in the new tank, should I wait some time before actually putting george in the new tank? How long?

• Here's one of my main issues, since i need to know it before i even put the new filter anywhere: How do i put the biomedia (ceramic rings.) on it??? The filter already came with a sponge, and i know i should put them so the water goes through the sponge first and biomedia after. Idk if i should use just the ceramic ring and maybe add a sponge at the beggining of the water pipe? If it's a good option, pls let me know, but so far from my research that's not the plan. But im not sure how that organization would be in my filter??? I thought about cutting the sponge that came with it as to put it just after where the water pipe is and put the rings after that, just before the wall. It's a little hard to explain so here's some photos. You can see the blue part i drew is not one full object, there's a big blue retangle and then smaller blue parts. That's because i plan on cutting it and i believe i can and should use what's left after i cut it. I hope its understandable? If its not, let me know and ill make a more understandable drawing on a piece of paper!

That's about it, i believe? Also, thank you all so much for the help before, you guys are a great community and have helped me and george a lot!!!
