Crack in nerite shell

Posted: 19 Apr 2021 01:36 AM PDT

So a week ago, I got a tiger nerite for my 5 gal heavily planted betta tank. For the past 24-30 hours he has been sitting at or above the water line. I know he moved once because he went from water line to well above. Water parameters were 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite 10-20 nitrate 79 degrees and 7.8 pH. It's my normal water change day so I did about 25-30% which brought him to about half in and half out again. At this point I noticed my betta nudging at him and staying right by the corner he was in and I also noticed he had a new crack/pit in his shell right at the tip which was definitely not there when I got him or even yesterday. Previously the betta was flaring at him less and less the longer he was in there and never outright attacking but now he was really paying attention to him and actually touching his shell. So on the recommendation of my boyfriend who keeps mystery snails and neocaridina shrimp, I tested my gh which was 3-4 (a half drop went in after the first and third drop which then turned green) which seems very low. Now I drip acclimated him to a bowl of water from my boyfriend's snail tank which has better conditions im assuming for shell health with a calcium chip and small bit of algae wafer, neither of which he touched. He moved around a bit and then I walked away and ten minutes later he's way above the water again. Looking more into it, there doesn't seem to be a lot of overlap between betta and snail parameters, so would it be worth it to try to raise my hardness with cuttlebone/seachem equilibrium etc? We also have home made snail food that is normally fed to the mystery snails, but im wondering, despite what I've seen with others is it actually viable to keep snails and bettas or should I return him to the store or try to convince my bf to put him in the snail tank? Also, if I try to change the parameters would that negatively affect my betta? Even in low hardness water, would a crack appear that quickly? If I did try to change the parameters what would be the happy medium for both occupants? Sorry for so many questions and lack of pictures, he's currently at the absolute wrong angle, but ill try to get some and add it in. Thanks in advance for any advice or comments, anything would be greatly appreciated.

Help, Mystery snail acting weird

Posted: 18 Apr 2021 05:56 PM PDT

So here's the jist

I've had a mystery snail for about a year (his previous owner had him for about 9 months.) with little problem besides shell erosion (which was in the process of being fixed). He is normally out and about and eats lots but for the past two months, he has been less active and eats less (fish food and spinach). He has now started to hang out of his shell ( for a day or so and then back to normal). This weekend he released large globs of white discharge and is now barely moving.

He lives by himself and has 3 gallons to himself with a filter. The water is about 74 degrees. I haven't changed his location or anything since I've gotten him. I cannot check water parameters, but I do put a wonder shell in there regularly.

I read online that these are signs of death, he is still alive but is very weak. Is there anything I can do? Or do I just try and keep I'm comfortable?

hi, last night my ivory mystery snail, iva, was way more inactive than usual. she was at the bottom at the tank in the same exact spot, open, and didnt move a muscle when i nudged her. i smelled her, no smell, no ammonia spike. i thought she passed away so i immediately put her in a ziploc bag outside. i go to check on her this morning and i see she somehow closed up in her shell? did i take her out too early? please help me out. shes the first mystery snail ive ever had. ive had her for 3 months.

Should I raise my KH?

Posted: 18 Apr 2021 10:03 AM PDT

I just tested my aquarium and I'm a little concerned with the KH results. My pH is 7, but my KH is 40. According to my API Strips diagnostic chart, the KH should be between 80-120 for a freshwater aquarium.

I want to raise the KH, but I'm hesitant because of the pH level. Should I risk raising the pH to fix the KH?
