I have a 10 gallon and cannot fit a lot of shrimp. I have one cherry shrimp that had a friend, also a cherry shrimp, die. I don't want him to be lonely, but I don't want babies. Are there two other types of shrimp that can go with a cherry without mating and that won't mate between themselves either

How to add substrate to an established cherry shrimp tank?

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 09:17 PM PDT

I have a 10 gallon tank with 8 cherry shrimp. I ordered more plants and realized that my substrate is not deep enough for the roots. Is it possible to safely add the exact same type of substrate (eco-complete) to the existing tank? Should I fish out the shrimp and put them in a smaller tank for the time being (with the same water from the previous water) or just carefully add the substrate? Need advice

dumb question time: CRS shrimp and water hardness issues + tankmates question

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 11:01 PM PDT

so, i got this 10 gal i was mainly planning to have as a guppy tank, but i recently discovered the beauty of CRS and wanted to add them. so far, i really only have 2 ramshorn snails in the 10 gal, and i would get the guppies once the shrimp are established. i'm very aware that guppies can and will try to eat shrimp and shrimp fry, and that CRS have very finnicky water preferences (causing them to be one of the more difficult freshwater shrimp to care for).

problem comes with softening my water.

so around where i live, the water might as well be liquid rock, which is more than likely be way too hard for a CRS. getting something to make RO water sounds way too pricey, so i looked into cheaper alternatives: rainwater (very rainy around here lately) and/or indian almond leaves. would combining those two (rain and almond leaves) make the water soft enough for the CRS to survive, maybe thrive?

if the above is yes, would guppies be fine living in CRS water parameters?

sorry for the stupid question, i've just been fretting and stressing over coming to terms that my aquarium dream may not work out. also, if this question doesn't belong here, i sincerely apologize, and i can move this to a more appropriate subreddit.

edit: forgot to mention i have a couple pieces of driftwood in my tank, which i've heard it releases tannins and softens water, so that may be another factor in water softening.

New shrimper needs advice/consoling

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 06:04 PM PDT

So I am not new to aquariums, but it's been a loooong time since I had one. I have never had shrimp before. I set up a new 7.5 gal planted tank, and had good water and it looked like it was decently cycled according to my ammonia and nitrogen testing. I did jump the gun a bit early and got shrimp before my self-imposed time limit to let the tank settle, but the initial batch was doing pretty good, lost about half, but found a bunch of molts and learned about GH and KH and TDS and osmotic shock. Still had 6 beautiful and lively shrimp just being their adorable shrimpy selves.

Wednesday morning, I did about a 12-15% water change because my water just won't clear up, and my nitrates were getting a bit higher than normal, it was at 20. I did use Seachem Prime in the new water, even though I am on well water and don't have chlorine. I didn't take the temp, but it felt the same to my hand. I did not drip it in, just a slow pour.

Came home from work, and cried a bit as I took out 5 dead shrimp. Frantically ordered a TDS meter, as that was the only thing I didn't have. I have been using the API liquid kits for ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, pH, GH and KH and copper.

TDS meter came yesterday, and I spent over an hour testing my well water and the tank water.

Here's my current water parameters:

TANK: amm 0/nitrite 0/nitrate 10/pH 6.8/GH 8/KH 3/temp 72F/TDS 184/Cu 0

Well water: amm 0.25(!)/nitrite 0/ nitrate <10/GH 8/KH 2/ pH 6.4/TDS 71/Cu 0

So basically my question is: What killed my shrimp? Is the TDS difference enough to have killed all but one of my shrimp from the water change? Should I use a remineralizer to make up the difference between new and old water?

Please help me keep my sole survivor alive. :(

Edit: Neocaridina shrimp!
