16 Gallon Update

Finally getting back to equilibrium after the Texas ice disaster killed all of my fish, a lot of my plants, and caused endless algea headaches. What should I put in it now?

I’m not too good at planted tanks but I’m a keep trying. I absolutely love this hobby!

My favorite betta (Zuko) wishes you a happy Thursday!

I've resigned myself to accepting the algae as just another ornamental plant. It mostly stays on the wood anyways.

This is my first ever fish tank (10 gal) and I’m in love with it. I’ve had it for about 2 months and just tidied up my plants. It’s cycled. I have 1 beta, 2 cory cats, 1 mystery snail, 1 nerite, and 2 ghost shrimp. Could I get another Cory and/or more shrimp? Or would that be overstocked?

Advice to Novices: Paint the back/sides of your tank

Posted: 11 Mar 2021 10:54 PM PST

There are a lot of tips novices should know, but the number one I wish I had known was to paint the back/sides on my tank.

Benefits:
1)Reduces fish stress. They will not see their reflection, which reduces stress.
3) Aesthetic. Painting the back/sides of your tank makes it more pleasing to the eye.
4) Fish and plant coloration: Fish coloration will change to match their environment. A darker background means deeper colors. Plants with a deep or unusual coloration look better against darker backgrounds.
5) Hiding mechanics. A dark background makes heaters, HoB tubes, and other mechanics almost disappear.

I honestly would not start a planted tank with fish without painting the background and/or one or both sides of the tank, depending on how it is displayed. I wish I had known this when I first started.
