If anyone in here loves Pokémon, this is my axie named Kabu, after Kabutops. Found this card from 1999 at the card shop today and just had to.

Help with axolotl?

Posted: 01 Mar 2021 08:54 AM PST

Hey guys, I'm really new to this subreddit as well as axolotl keeping. I currently have a 45 gal planted community tank, so I definitely know what I'm doing in that aspect and know the basics for keeping an axotl. So, here's a little background before I ask you guys; My step sister had this axolotl for about 9 months, and occasionally I would feed him, but now I've acquired him as she has moved out. She left him in a Tupperware container for me yesterday, I have a 20 gal long im ready to set up for him but here's where my questions come in: Would it be smart for me to use some water from my 45 gal community tank so that I don't have to completely recycle? I don't want the little guy in the container for too long, and I'd like him to be in his new home but I'm worried ill give him ammonia burn if the tank isn't cycled. Also she took the HOB filter that was in the tank he was originally in, so im looking for recommendations on a new filter for him as well? I don't have any beneficial bacteria i can add to a new filter set up, unless i use some from my 45 gal HOB filter. So guys, any advice please? I'm stressing about him and I just want to set him up and make him happy in a new home.

Ammonia not converting but I have nitrite?

Posted: 01 Mar 2021 08:34 AM PST

My ammonia doesn't seem to be converting but I have nitrites? Is this normal for it to not go down but to have nitrites I'm so confused I'm a week in and haven't had to top up ammonia at all

My ammonia is low but my are my nitrites high and there are nitrates present.

I recently bought two juvenile axolotls and put them in a 30 gallon cycled ( at least I thought it was) tank. Before we bought them we made sure that the ammonia and nitrite levels spiked and dropped to zero and created nitrates before we added them. I did a water test today to check the nitrates but saw that my nitrites were quite high, around 2PPM. My ammonia is at zero and nitrates are at about 10 PPM. If there are nitrates present clearly there are some nitrite eating bacteria in my tank right? I don't know why its so high? I feed them about once a day which does feel like a lot. Am I feeding them too much? I also suck up their poops whenever I see them and check the tank quite frequently. Tank temp is at 63-64F.

I'm currently doing a water change is there anything else I should do to prevent any damage to my axolotls? What could I be doing wrong? Any advice or suggestions?

EDIT: I just did a second test and the nitrites are much lower? .25PPM-.5PPM Maybe I accidently added to many drops? Also my axolotls are very active right now not lethargic or anything and are still accepting food

I thought it would be cool to see what you guys/gals named your axies and where you got their names from😌
