So I seem to be inheriting an axolotl

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 02:33 AM PDT

My aunt and uncle are downsizing and have offered me their albino axolotl. Naturally I said yes but now I am doubting.

I've had fish and I have had frogs, but this is new and while my aunt swears this is the easiest animal ever... I'd like advice.

I'll be getting a full rundown on what has kept this guy alive thus far but what advice would YOU have liked before starting this hobby? And how do I cool the water if it starts to get warm? (Note: I have no idea if this is even gonna be a thing. My bedroom is generally cool and this guy comes with a nice thermometer to make sure I know he is comfy. It just worries me, as do many things for that matter.)

I know I sound dumb. I'm sure everything will be fine. But I am an anxious person and just wanna give this guy his/her best life with me. I have always been fond of the little guy and enjoyed feeding him with tongs when visiting, which is prob why he was offered to me, I love him already.

My tank is consistently cloudy?

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 10:18 AM PDT

I have a 40g breeder that has a sand/rock base, lots of plants, and one chonky axolotl.

It has been mildly cloudy for the past month or 2. I assumed it was a bacterial bloom, but it hasn't gone away. It's bad enough that I can hardly see the back wall of the tank.

It's been set up since August 2020, so fully cycled. It's tested regularly and hasn't given me any reason for concern. Typically 0ppm ammonia, 0ppm nitrite, 0-10ppm nitrate, and 64°-66°.

Salem, the lotl, seems fine. He's eating well, no signs of fungus, and no changes in behavior.

I'm just at a loss as to what could be causing it? Any ideas?

Safe for tank?

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 02:53 AM PDT

So I without even thinking today painted my nails with a bite stopping polish (the ones that taste horrible when you bite them) and now I'm so worried I can't put my hands in the tank. I'm pretty sure I'll have to scrub my hands and ask my partner to feed my axolotl but I just wanted to ask and see

I fed him one worm this morning and now (midnight) I see he has what appears to be a bruise? Anyone know what this might be?

Hi, I have seen others buy this hobbit hole for their axolotl, and I just want to make sure it’s safe. The top is pretty rough but I don’t think it would hurt them. Anyone who has this piece, have any troubles w sharp edges? Thanks!

How do I raise ph?? Can low ph stop them from eating??

Posted: 18 Mar 2021 08:00 PM PDT

Everything's been fine but she has refused to eat for two weeks. Today her ph is low (6), could that be why she's not eating?? Temp is 63.6F and there hasn't been any stress. This is my first axolotl and I'm still learning, I want to take good care of her so any advise is much appreciated

Edited to add the ph level
