Help identify my axie color! I’m a first time axie mom and just adopted this babe that’s about 2mo old. I know that his parents were a wild type and a Lucy. What would you call this color pattern? Is it too soon to tell?

Hello, I was wondering if someone could help. Yesterday I changed the water of my melanistic axolotle and he was just fine, today I woke up and his tail was really red also the tips of his fingers, what should I do? It's something wrong?

temp weird? and stomach bigger than normal

Posted: 14 Mar 2021 05:11 AM PDT

I was cleaning my tank today and everything was going good. I check his temperature all throughout the day right. it was at 17 degrees Celsius. I have a fan that blows on to his tank to keep it staying cool because where I am is pretty hot. I had checked the now again. an hour after checking it before. and for some reason it says -47 degrees Celsius. and now it's at "L degrees Celsius". I'm not very good with this stuff but I'm kinda confused why it says that after an hour later on checking it. also I fed my axolotl today as usual. and my pet store sells axolotl food labeled "axolotl food" it has a mixture of fish and bloodworms in it and it's in a cube kinda shape. I tear apart bits of it and feed it to my fish. and I also have axolotl biscuit things. I cut the biscuit into quarters only cause he's still small and the biscuit is kinda big. but I checked him and his stomach is more "round", bigger than usual for some reason. I don't know if I did something wrong. I did give him more food than I usually do but he ate it all. I don't know if that's why he has a big round belly now but I'm not sure

Gill Fungus Help?

Posted: 13 Mar 2021 07:59 PM PST

So I've been doing tea baths for my lotls for about two weeks roughly, and 100% water changes every day, but there is still fungus. When i just looked at them now, there was a large amount of white fuzzy stuff floating in the water and on their gills. I just did a tea bath and changed their water roughly 8 hours ago. Is there anything I can do? I had seen someone online talking about stronger tea baths

Can anyone tell me if this is normal? The ends of his toes used to be black but recently it's moved to the bottom of his feet's too. His behaviour hasn't changed he's very active and eating like Normal. He's an albino (not sure what kind) and I would say nearly a year old, if that helps.

Help- Axolotls cannot/will not eat worms?

Posted: 13 Mar 2021 04:33 PM PST

Hello, I really need help and I will be so grateful if anyone can help.

This is regarding two black axolotls. They aren't mine, I am posting on the owners behalf. The owner has had the axies for ~5 months. Age when getting them is unknown, they were juveniles with all four limbs and gills.

The critical issue is they cannot or will not eat worms, like garden worms. They are washed in rain water after being dug up, from organic dirt that isn't treated with any chemicals.

The owner has tried:

  • Different sized worms.
  • Cutting the worms up, and leaving them whole.
  • Holding the worms for them
  • Dangling the worms in front of them, and then dropping them towards them.

The axies will take the worms, they get excited for them and shoot after them. They take them in their mouths and it looks like they are eating them or swallowing them.

You will think they have eaten the worm, then they suddenly spit it out. It doesn't matter how many times you repeat the process, the same thing happens.

Unfortunately the owner has received terrible advice from the aquarium where they bought them, as well as seeking alternative opinions from two other aquarium stores.

They have told the owner not to worry, if they won't eat the worms there is nothing that can be done. To keep feeding them meal worms and that they can live off meal worms.

From everything I have read here, and online, I know that Axolotls do not receive all their vital nutrients from meal worms, meal worms should be a treat, and it can also cause issues with the filter.

Since arriving the Axolotls have suffered chronic problems. The owner cycled the tank for over 8 weeks prior to getting the Axolotls, and had the water repeatedly tested. Their floor is large smooth river rocks, each over 1 inch long. They have natural plants from the aquarium. They did have hiding places (I will get to this).

When the Axolotls arrived they were very poorly. They looked like they had a strange sheen on them. Within 24 hours their tank, which had been crystal clear for 8 weeks, turned such a thick green that there was almost 0 visibility.

Their owner spoke with the aquarium who advised them to clean the tank. The owner had to clean every 48 hours for a month. They slowly removed what could be offending the tank. Individual plants, their hidey holes, vacuumed the rocks diligently.

Each time anything else more than the rocks and a select number of plants were added to the tank, it would turn green again. This is why they no longer have their hidey holes. They do use the plants to play and hide in.

It took two months for the axies to lose their strange colouring. They began to thrive, however they still would not eat worms. They were growing and gaining weight on the meal worms, and very occasionally getting down a real worm.

I now have grave concerns for the axies. I have noticed with my visits over the past few weeks that the axies have become very thin. I would wager they are dangerously underweight.

Their owner is distraught. They spend so much time each day trying to encourage them to eat their worms. It doesn't seem they can, or will.

I suggested maybe it's because they know they will get the meal worms anyway. Is this possible? Do they need to get 'hungry enough' so that they will eat the worms and not be offered the delicious snack alternative?

Their owner has also bought them feeder fish. They are able to eat these just fine, and do so.

Their owner continues to vacuum and clean their tank every 6 days. They are very happy Axolotls and friendly.

The owner loves their Axolotls and cares for them a lot. I am tired of them receiving abysmal advice from the aquariums. There has been something terribly wrong with the axies from day one.

I hope they can be saved, because they are very loved.

Please, if you can help it will mean a lot.

Gill Fungus Treatment - Methylene Blue

Posted: 13 Mar 2021 10:18 AM PST

My axie had recurrent gill fungus, even in the cleanest of waters. Methylene Blue dips totally cured her and she's thriving again. I did just 1 drop of meth blue per 2 cups of conditioned water, and dipped her in it for 10 seconds once a day. Her fungus was pretty much completely gone after just 3 days. I've tried other treatments but this was the one I found worked most effectively. It got rid of the fungus and was gentle on my lotl too. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
