Koi Keep on Dying

Posted: 11 Mar 2021 12:00 PM PST

Hi,

Hopefully someone can give some advice.

My father in law has a 75 gallon tank with 8 Koi (small - most of them are under 5') that has had no issues until about a month ago where he's had five of them die - one by one.

Had 2 die initially... fins started getting damaged (thought it was other fish biting or attacking them) and he bought a couple more and added them to the tank. Another 3 have since died... all sort of the in the same manner - fins deteriorating and then death.

About 2 weeks ago we had one Koi just laying there at the bottom of the tank and doing anything. Got a water test kit, PH was a bit high and ammonia a bit high... so we did 50% water change and another 25% a week after. Also added aquarium salt and Melafix (I've read contradicting things about Melafix but was recommended to add it by someone at a local shop) We also use conditioner with a water change. Also changed out the water filter just to rule another thing out.

The Koi got better and went back to normal after 5 days but last night we noticed fin damage to another fish and another koi passed away this morning.

We're not professionals and I've just been trying to help... and kind of lost at what to do. Any help would be really appreciated.

Thank you.

Does ozone damage pond liner

Posted: 11 Mar 2021 10:01 AM PST

Is anyone using ozone to control algae in their ponds? I have two large ponds with a good filtrations system. However, I'm having trouble keeping algae under control. I am reducing the fish population this spring to help out. I have also considered installing ozone; I really love the crystal clear water that ozone seems to accomplish. However, I'm concerned it may damage my pond liner. Does ozone damage pond liners?

Die Off Question

Hello r/Koi!

My friend has been dabbling with koi and recently bought a large dual tank setup. He doesn't have any problem keeping them alive in his pond, but has 100% mortality rate in the dual tanks. Is this something y'all are familiar with? He has his own water well so there pond and the tank water are sourced from the same place. I'm an aquaculture "enthusiast" and have a freshwater aquarium, but I can't figure out what's going on with his setup!
