ARRGGGGGHHHH!!! :: sighs::

I should know better, been a goldfish keeper for most of my life AND I should know better, and yet TODAY .. just very frustrating to deal with.

start with yesterday, my very young g/kid comes racing into the house yelling I got goldfish I GOT GOLDFISH Grandma! LOOK what friend gave me, and shoves the Tupperware bowl at me.
Well crap, :: I look::: big crappy crap.. 4 tiny comets and a black moor...and they don't look very good. Fins clamped, the moor has a film over his eyes, and tilted sideways.
ok kid chill out where did you get these? " Son in Laws friend, Mr Stupid, give them to me for free". :: give SiL a lifted eyebrow:: Really dude? :: half ass excuses start:: well Mom, Friend was gonna flush them cause they kept dying so g/kid says you can save them so he just gave them to kid.. :: I rolled my eyes:: and of course you brought them to me right? :: SIGHS::

you ALL know where this is going now don't ya?

the cycled hospital tank gawds these are some small fish! The 4 comets are just past fry stage, if they weren't sick looking I'd tossed them into the cull tank and not felt bad. The moor is a regular black moor just pretty small., to big to be a feeder but still pretty small. Anyways the kid is soooo excited. His own fishies.. and I already know at least 2 of them are gonna die , I can't save them.. they are the pretty ones of course.. and they have names!

This morning

1 dead, 2 dying

the Black Moor and 1 comet are not fin clamped but not swimming very well, .....hummm Maybe

this evening,

3 pretty ones dead, the moor and the dark comet are still swimming but not like they should.
:: sighs::

damn it why me?

How many of you have lost fancy goldfish over the years?

Posted: 19 Jan 2021 09:15 PM PST

I'm setting up a 4ft fish tank which will be my first goldfish tank and I was planning on getting an oranda, ranchu and ryukin. I'm sooo excited, I'm so in love with oranda especially. I've been spending almost a year watching videos, browsing websites and chatting in goldfish groups/reddit and I'm so so excited to get my goldies but.. over the last few weeks, I've noticed a LOT of the youtubers, goldfish-only instagram accounts and general people I follow on FB that have lots of fancies have had a lot of their fish die just randomly for no real reason. Some of them mention this is common with fancies? I knew they could be prone to injuries and prone to diseases if you weren't careful and giving them proper care, but I hadn't heard that they could just randomly die "for no real reason"... and now that I think about it, a lot of the youtubers I watch will get new goldfish and then a few months later you never see them again? It makes me sacred to get fancies, I love all my pets so much and to me I want goldfish more as a pet to care for and interact with not just as a hobby to enjoy. I'd be really devastated to have my goldfish barely lasting a year and just constantly replacing them...

I wanted to get some advice and insight from people who don't just have like 100+ tanks filled with goldfish that don't even have names... you know? lol. How many have you lost? Does it really happen that often? Do you think I should get something like fantails and comments instead?

Thank you :)

Shubunkin had a weird black growth with white edges on upper lip for 1-2 days; today it's gone but now a notch is missing from lip in it's place?

Shubunkin had a weird black growth with white edges on upper lip for 1-2 days; today it's gone but now a notch is missing from lip in it's place?

Background Details: I have 3 shubunkins in a 50 gal outdoor pond. Pond has plants, HoB filter, and I do 10-20% water changes (about) every other week, although the weeks before I noticed this growth, I was sick and got behind on my water changes.

It started Sunday as something barely visible just inside his upper lip; He seemed to be having a hard time extending his mouth to make the gulping motion. That day, he was slow to wake up and was just floating under the leaves of a plant in the tank, not very interested in food. Normally he's up and at em first thing in the morning, very active, curious, and hungry. He also is normally pretty fat, but that morning, he looked much skinnier. I called the fish store to describe it and the person on the phone said it was probably fungus and could need medication. This was before I found this subreddit.

I think I first saw the protruding growth (black with white edges extending out past lip) Monday morning. I went to the aquarium store to show them the video and the dude who helped me confirmed it was likely fungus; he recommended medicating their pellet food with KanaPlex + Focus. I got those yesterday and will feed medicated food for 5 days.

I'm intrigued by the idea of a salt bath if that would help, but am nervous since I've never done it before and am not sure if my salt will work. I also don't know how to effectively treat their entire pond or if that's necessary.

  • Is it actually fungus? Or something else?
  • Is KanaPlex medicated food a decent plan of action?
  • Can he recover/regrow? And how can I avoid this again? Just more/better water maintenance?

Folded gill cover?

Posted: 19 Jan 2021 12:42 PM PST

One of my fantails has had a folded gill cover ever since she was quite small and it hasn't developed over time as far as I'm aware. Her behavior hasn't seemed to be affected by this either up until around a week ago when I noticed her gills were quite a pale red and she'd been displaying flashing behavior. I began treatment for gill flukes and she has improved drastically since but I just want an opinion on her folded gill cover I guess. Is there anything that may have caused it or was she just born like that?

ICH?!?! I was preparing to treat ich yesterday but then I noticed the spots “grew” since then. And no longer looks like the small white speckling ich presents. What other disease could this be and how should I treat it?

Help! Can't read new Black Moor's behavior; test strip readings leave a lot of room for interpretation, and I'm not sure how woried to be.

Posted: 19 Jan 2021 01:39 PM PST

In a nutshell, I impulse bought a Black Moor yesterday while at the fish store getting stuff for my shubunkins. I know I should've had an already cycled tank ready before considering a new fish, but I couldn't leave without him. I'm not brand new to goldfish (have 3 shubunkins in 50 gal outdoor pond), but this is my first indoor setup and I'm super paranoid.

I got the new guy set up in a *small, temporary* 10 gal tank while I get a larger, more permanent set up ready for him. I used recently refreshed water from my outdoor pond to fill the new tank, and tested both tank and pond, but now I'm starting to doubt my ability to read test strips accurately. The margin of error is so small, just like the difference in color between 0 and 20ppm on my test strips. I read the wiki and saw the recommended water parameters (slightly different than what I had written down from other online sources from before) and I'm just doubting everything. I'll include test strip readings and pictures of my readings and set up below.

Ammonia reading | Water parameters on test strip | picture of tank

Black Moor behavior: swimming around this morning | laying on bottom | after water change

He was swimming and exploring fine yesterday and this morning, but just 15 or so mins ago he started laying on the bottom not moving much. I tested the water with my strips but panicked and did a 10-20% water change and he seems to have perked up; swimming and exploring (fin sometimes up, sometimes down).

TL; DR: New fish friend in small, temporary 10 gal tank. How much waste can this little guy make a day? I don't trust my reading of test strips...Should I do just plan on daily partial water changes until I get a bigger tank to keep him safe? Sorry I'm so anxious and clueless, any wisdom is appreciated.

Filter

Posted: 19 Jan 2021 04:50 AM PST

Hi, my filter is barely working and I'm not sure why, I have cleaned every part of it so I know there isn't any blockages so I think it is just broken. How long could two goldfish live without a filter? I don't have enough money to replace it right now as COVID has affected my job and I'm wondering whether it is worth leaving the noisy filter on that can get a little bit filtered or if I should just turn it off and change the water more frequently
