I am making a floating ledge, and plan on planting it.

Posted: 10 Nov 2020 10:31 PM PST

I would like to make a 'floating' underwater ledge. I plan to give it walls so that it is about 2-3" deep, and it will basically be a wide bowl suspended about 6" above the main level of substrate. I plan on filling the ledge (bowl) with fluorite and planting it. Between the ledge and the main substrate will be a shaded area about 5-6" tall, with hides for skittish critters. (The tank is a 24" deep hex, so I have lots of height to work with)

The main layer of substrate will be standard aquarium gravel, and beneath that will be a ugf that will be powered by a pump to the surface. So there will be a general downward flow through the tank and past the ledge.

As I will be using some pvc planking in constructing the base of the bowl, I have the option to drill lots of tiny holes in it to allow flow through the fluorite. Is this a good idea, bad idea, or waste of time?
