Common goldfish, how much current in the aquarium is optimum?

Posted: 09 Nov 2020 09:20 PM PST

Hey guys, I've been keeping common goldfish for five years now. I have 4 common and 1 comet. Commet I've had 5+ years. The others, about 3 years. All about 10-12 inches. They're in a sand substrate 6ft 125gal tank.

Recently I just redid my water change system by adding a hose end to my FX6 filter so rather than starting a siphoned with a hose in the tank, I just connect it to my filter and open a valve.

Anyway the way my filter is setup, the intake is at the far left of the tank. The output is in the middle of the tank and blows up and to the right side of the tank, opposite of my intake. This creates some surface agitation and the water/waste makes its way eventually to the intake. The left side of the tank has a small tiny airstone for just a little more surface agitation.

I've been considering a circulation pump/wave maker for a few reasons.

  1. When I do water changes and add new water I have to add declorinator to the tank. When I do this I close the valves to my filter because I don't want chlorine or chloramines to damage my biological filtration. I usually wait 15-30min before turning my filter back on, but during that time the only agitation is the small airstone and the hose that pumped the water in. I'm thinking by adding a circulation pump, this will ensure the water is properly mixed/declorinated before I open my filter valves. I'd probably run the circulation pump for 15-20 min.

  2. Adding a circulation pump may give the fish some more current to play in. I'd be putting it on a timer to allow for rest at night. It would also help to move waste to the filter.

As it is after about a week, the flow on my filter slows down considerably, so I change out the filter floss in the top of my FX6 weekly and squeeze out the course sponges every 2-3 weeks. Every two months I dig in and really clean the sponges using my hose that's draining tank water. I want to ensure that when the filter flow slows there's still enough oxygenation.

Is this too much circulation and unnecessary? If it's still too much flow, I may still get one soley for the purpose of having the water good and mixed before I allow it to flow through my filter, and once the filter is on, shut off the circulation pump.

What are you thoughts? Also is there a size recommendation? I'm considering the Aqueon 950 or 1250 since that's something I can pickup locally, however I could order it much cheaper, so that may be the route I go. I'm not looking for anything fancy either.

Had to euthanize a chronically ill fish without clove oil - Baking Soda for Euthanasia

Posted: 09 Nov 2020 08:41 AM PST

So one of my beloved fish has been isolated in a hospital tank for about 4 months, and no matter what I did, how consistent I was and what I tried to improve for him to get better, he just showed more and more concerning symptoms and was bottom sitting for about a week and a half with no improvement physically but instead showing more and more necrosis damage. Today I decided to put him down and not having the guts (pardon the pun) to physically mutilate an animal and lacking the funds to spend on clove oil (I need more dechlorinator for my fish), I looked up alternative methods.

I overdosed him with baking soda, which acts as an anesthetic, although in my opinion less effectively that clove oil made it look, and when used in excess, as a method of euthanasia. It'll take about 10 minutes if you put about 3 tablespoons/0.9L, and you wait until his breathing slows and then stops. I put his little container into a paper bag and closed it to make it nice and dark for him for when he went away. I'm so devastated today, I tried so hard to save my baby. I just wanted to post to let go of some of this tension and to share an effective method of euthanasia with the members of this reddit. I hope you never need to use them and spend all the time you can loving your fishy friends :)

I am nervous to move home my Black Moors together. (Breeding male concerns)

Posted: 09 Nov 2020 03:27 PM PST

Moby is my 8-inch long macho Black Moor goldfish. His breeding stars have been apparent since I rescued him and nursed him back from ich over the summer. Even though it is chilly autumn now he still has his breeding stars. He lives alone currently in a 55g planted tank. He is a pretty streamlined fish and doesn't have the typical googly Black Moor eyes.

I just adopted another (7-inch) black moor who ended up being a female. I picked her up from a craigslist ad and she was in a bucket when I arrived. She is round. She is a balloon. She looks like the most elegant & graceful blimp. Bulk wise she is bigger than Moby but her shape and smaller fins are putting her at a swimming disadvantage to Moby. I know Moby is going to go crazy if I move her into the 55g. I am worried about him pushing her around as he may not weigh more, he is more agile than her.

She was in a bucket with a bubbler for apparently 9 days before I picked her up. She's been in my 20g quarantine tank for 6 days. She eats well and poops even better. Her eyes are slightly cloudy. I assume from stress. She was moved from a pond to a bucket and now an indoor tank goldfish.

Any suggestions? I do not care to breed these two.

Why have all my fish suddenly got some wierd white wound on their forehead? This started with the spotty fantail about 4 days ago. (had to post a video because they're never still enough to take a good photo)

Came back from a cross country road trip to learn that my best friend of 5 years is now swimming around in that giant pond up in the sky... We both could really use some love from this community today.

Hangry goldfish?

Posted: 09 Nov 2020 01:09 PM PST

I need some advice because I've been searching online and can't seem to find any helpful information. I have 4 young fancy goldfish (2 black moors, 2 fantails) in a 75 gal tank with sand, java fern, and java moss. They are fed twice a day: once in the morning, once in the evening. They usually get blanched veggies every day, but throughout the week they get omega one pellets, repashy, algae wafers, frozen bloodworms, and frozen brine shrimp. A few weeks ago, I was away for the weekend and they weren't fed for approximately 36 hours. When I got home, one fantail and the two moors had loose or missing scales, and one of the moors had a slightly shredded tail. I fed them, did a water change, added some stress coat and they all healed. I did not witness any aggressive behaviour. Recently, I noticed one of the fan tails and the two black moors chasing each other around but not aggressively. There was a little bit of one of the moors bumping the underside of the others, but no nipping. I learned this could be spawning behaviour, and sure enough, one of the moors developed breeding stars. However, I was away again for one night this weekend and was late feeding them the next day. I saw the same three chasing and nipping each other. One has a torn dorsal fin and they all have missing or loose scales. I dropped food in, and the behaviour stopped immediately and has not returned. They never tussle or show aggression while eating. There is some jostling if they go after the same pellet but that's it. After they've eaten, they just hang out together or sift through the sand and moss. Are they actually just hangry???

Lumpy! It's behaving normally, just checked the nitrates, and the others are fine. Was going to try some salt?

Filter recommendations for tank

Posted: 09 Nov 2020 10:17 AM PST

I'm restarting an old tank for my parents right now. It's a 40 gal tall with a large gravel bottom housing 2 ryukins (~4 inches long) in it. tbfh I don't know much about goldfish, mostly a tropical planted tank person myself so I'd love some advice on what you guys are using for filtration and how to best retain a low maintenance, once a week water change tank for them. Yes low maintenance and goldfish probably don't go hand and hand, but whatever gets me closest to that.

The tank currently has one running penguin 200 filter that's seeded with substrate from my cycled tank and some sponges. I have a second penguin 200 hooked up to it that's not currently running. I just ordered some purigen and was thinking of packing the filter with that and one of the default filter pads. I hate how loud these filters are and how useless the biowheel is so I'd prefer to just replace everything for something quieter and more efficient. Is there anything you're using for a 40 gal that's quiet and efficient you'd recommend?

Black friday is coming up soon so I was thinking about waiting until then and getting a canister filter. Is there anything within ~$80 price range that you'd recommend? Thanks!

Also let me know if anything sounds concerning about the set up or worth changing. Will welcome any advice.

White bugs on hood please help me please please

Posted: 09 Nov 2020 09:36 AM PST

Heyy I didn't manage to get a pic.. these creatures are tiny at first I thought it wasn't even living then it started moving.... I noticed them 3 days ago. 2 days ago I washed the hood with water and managed to get them all down the drain yesterday I did nothing - today I found a couple on the underside again :/. Its not many of them buy it's still noticable if you stare at the hood for a while. I'm kinda freaking out does anyone know what they are? Tiny white and seem to have several legs on each side. AND WHERE DO THEY COME FROM? I changed the filter ( that was due anyway) to see if they somehow lived in there but I'm not sure.. now I took the hood off altogether but I'm scared they're gonna start living on my desk that's right next to the aquarium ugh I dont know.

Btw they're not in the water and not on the water surface as far as I can tell please help me please please
