Salt and Dropsy?

Posted: 19 Nov 2020 05:28 PM PST

Hi everyone,

Is salt dangerous to use when treating for dropsy?

My 6 year old Ranchu recently started exhibiting some pine coning and I've been trying desperately to save him, but I keep finding conflicting information. Since noticing the pine coning, I raised the temp to 86 and I've been doing 80% water changes every other day. I also started adding Epsom Salt to the tank at a rate of 1 tbsp per 10 gallons. I've been feeding Metroplex and Kanaplex combined in some Repashy gel food (which is what he normally eats) for the last 3-4 days. I normally put a little salt in the tank during my water changes to keep salinity at 1-2%, so he's pretty used to some salt being in the tank. The thing is, I don't know whether I should keep salting the tank. I've heard both that salt puts more strain on his organs, and that it takes pressure off his organs b/c it helps him regulate the fluid in his body, so I don't know what to believe. Should I continue salting the tank during dropsy treatment, or should I stop and just rely on the Epsom salts? Or would it be bad to stop salting the tank given he's used to it? Today's water change was the first time I didn't add salt back in and now he's bottom sitting, which he usually doesn't do after a water change.

Also, a month and a half ago, his tank mate, a black moor died. Wasn't sure of what. Then my ranchu started floating with stringy and floaty poo, and I worried about a bacterial infection, thought maybe my moor had died of Columnaris. I treated my ranchu's tank (the main tank since he was the only goldfish left) with Metroplex and Furan-2 for a couple weeks. He stopped floating, but my biological filter was decimated, so it took about a month of near daily water changes to get the filter back up. I've been measuring zero ammonia or nitrites for a couple weeks now, but then noticed the pine coning.

Here are some tank parameters for reference:

Test Results

Ammonia Level Tank: 0 (API drops)

Nitrite Level Tank: 0 (API drops)

Nitrate level Tank: 5 (API drops)

Ph Level, Tank: 7.4 - 7.6 normally

Q:Water temperature

A: 86

Q: Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running?

A: 40 gallons

Q: What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)?

A: Cascade CCF3UL Canister Filter (265gph). I also have a UV filter hooked up and running.

Q: How often do you change the water and how much?

A: Doing an 80% water change every other day

Q: How many fish in the tank and their size?

A: 1 ranchu, about 4-5 inches long

Q:What kind of water additives or conditioners?

A: Seachem Prime and Seachem Acid Buffer, as my tap water is a bit high in Ph

Q: What do you feed your fish and how often?

A: Repashy gel food 2x daily

Q: Any new fish added to the tank?

A: No

Q: Any medications added to the tank?

A: Epsom salt (1 tbsp per 10 gallons)

Q: List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank.

A: Metroplex and Kanaplex in food for the last 3 days

Q: Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus?

A: Nope, just pine coning.

Q: Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.?

A: He's eating regularly and seems somewhat active, though occasionally he bottom sits. He always gets up when I go out though. He was floaty the first day I noticed the pine coning, but after adding epsom salt, that stopped.

Q: Treatments on hand

A: Kanaplex, Metroplex, PraziPro, Epsom salt, Aquarium salt, Maracyn 2, Furan-2, and MinnFinn

Can duckweed he used as a staple feed for goldfish?

Posted: 19 Nov 2020 12:37 PM PST

I know it's pretty common as a addition to a diet, but can it be used as the main food with pellets as the addition? I have a tank that produces way more duckweed than I thought it would and would rather use it as a staple if possible then try to eradicate it in the tank

Fish keep dying, need advice :(

Posted: 19 Nov 2020 05:50 AM PST

Hi everyone, I wanted to share my past here a bit because I'm getting really frustrated. It feels almost as if I am cursed.

Ever since my 2 year old goldfish died in September I've had 5 small goldfish/shubs over the course of 3 months. One by one, they died, with the longest one living for 2 months. Basically it went like this;

  • My first fish died from parasites/overfeeding by family members? Also spent the last weeks constantly on the ground. (Only found out about parasites later, but the symptoms matched)
  • Cleaned and emptied whole tank, after two weeks I refilled it with completely new decoration, stones, plants, water etc.
  • Let in 2 small goldfish
  • After 2 weeks my fish have parasitic symptoms; lethargic, flashing, small white spots etc. I have done many water changes etc. Parameters are fine.
  • A friend gifted me two fish out of nowhere, so they stayed in that tank for a few hours as well (as I didn't have space elsewhere)
  • I then put those two fish in a new, secondary tank and started a warm water & salt cure to prevent possible parasites.
  • I started a Cerpofor Alparex medicine cure for the main tank where a parasitic infection was obvious.
  • It's too late; my two fish pass away from the parasites :(
  • I let that tank continue to cycle with the medicine cute, then emptied it completely. I'm too scared to use it again.
  • Meanwhile in the new tank things are going smooth for 1,5 months, with regular water changes.
  • Suddenly after 1,5 months one of the two fish stops being active, gets swim bladder disease (from overfeeding by a family member) and dies. I am however worried it wasn't just the overfeeding but also the parasites maybe, as he lost activity?
  • I used Cerpofor Alparex again but is was too late..........
  • And now my last fish is dying, he is on the ground... He was unbalanced since day one (no idea why, we got him like that), but now the smallest amount of food makes his swim bladder expand and his unbalance makes him constantly spin. I am wondering if the parasites have something to do with this?

I don't want to give up fishkeeping but I'm also done with fish dying because of me. I know overfeeding appears a big issue which I am constantly cautious about (but family members not ...) but I have a huge fear the parasites are the main evil in my two tanks. Any advice? Can I permanently get rid of them or should I give up?

How can I make my fish eat garlic?

Posted: 19 Nov 2020 05:52 AM PST

So, my gold refuses to eat garlic, and when he does eat it, he makes his "spicy face" where he moves his mouth open and closed really fast and just looks at my like, "Why?" I've heard that some people will puree their garlic and soak the fish pellets in them, but I haven't heard of anything from anyone that I know of that working. What are some methods that have worked for my goldfish keepers out there for your picky eaters?

Edit: I realized I have written this post in a way that may imply that I'm force feeding my fish. This was a hyperbole. He expects bloodworms or peas when I don't feed him his pellets and will eat the garlic but with pick at it first, so it's his least preferred "treat" to his favorite laxative peas and fish protein bar bloodworms.
