I’ve got an axolotl who is about 10 inches long. Is there any substrate that can hold plants that won’t cause impaction.

I went on to a discord sever for axolotls and I said they keep going to the surface and taking air and I instantly got told they are dying and I'm not doing anything its ammonia poisoning apparently but the test say there's no ammonia in there?

I have two of the exact same thermometers and they read a 5 degrees difference, they're at the same height too. It makes me wonder if the one I had in there first was off temp, so now I'm wondering what are some good reliable thermometers
