Something is wrong. Found him floating at top of the tank this morning. Floats on belly, on back, and on side..... but when I touch him he swims away like nothing is wrong. Looks fatter than usual so put in tub with spring water in bottom of fridge. No odd marks or odd behavior

Axolotl food options

Posted: 19 Nov 2020 01:27 AM PST

Hey guys, over the spring/summer I have fed my axolotl worms from my property. These have been such a good good choice for him but Ohio is starting to get pretty cold so worms are not really an option any more. I've tried pellets with him and he's not a fan. Ive heard of some people feeding beef heart/liver for a main food choice but was wondering what food options you guys recommend! Thanks for your time!

axie help? gills!

Posted: 18 Nov 2020 10:49 PM PST

Hi! I've posted here before about my axie Milk (high irodophore copper) and he's doing well- he's getting really big. I decided to get him a friend, and while he's quarantining, he's in a tub. You know the drill- 100% water changes daily, feed them, water conditioner, etc. Here's where I went wrong. :/

I always learned that axies shouldn't be picked up with a net. For the 3 months (long story) that my axie was tubbed, he took being transported by hand like a champ- fabulous gill growth, ate reguarly, the whole shebang. I never thought of putting them in a smaller tub/bowl (of course facepalm).

I'm a little over a week til he'll be quarantined for a month. When I was transporting him one night, I figured out that he had a fungus. Well, I did what anyone does- I googled it. Tea bath- I didn't have any aquarium salt on hand, and all I could gather is that there is no gray area- either aquarium salt is great or it's horrible and only a last resort. Well- I brewed the tea, waited forever for it to cool down- and when I was transporting him, he flopped down out of my hands- nothing terrible. His gills immediately shrunk, but not fully. I continued putting him in the tea bath (keep in mind- I was panicked. I quickly googled it while I put him back in the water- and figured out that (I guess) you could put him back in. Well- I did concentrated tea baths for 15 minutes and then dumped the tea water into his tub (I read somewhere that that would possibly help). It's day 6~ and there's been no improvement. They've actually gone all the way down to the stalks (see attached pictures)- but the fungus is gone now.... Small victories, I guess.

What do I do from here? Is there anything I can do- other than wait? He's refusing food- but I would too, if I was stressed from being dropped. He, before, was eating more than my 1 1/2 year old axie- and had incredible, gorgeous gills. Can I do anything other than just... wait for them to grow back? Anything I can do to help him? I hate to see him like this.

Thank you for even reading this. Anything helps- and in the future, I'm never using my hands again. Not after the research I've done over the last couple days. (I stopped after I dropped him)

(pre accident) Pre Accident (post accident) Axie
