Goldfish

Just a friendly reminder to invest in a freshwater testing kit & a detoxifier like Prime. I managed to bring my mom’s goldfish back after he fainted from developing a quiet & slowly building nitrite poisoning that had gone unnoticed. He would have passed if I were minutes late.

The price tag might be a bit high but it's worth it as they generally have a long shelf life (4+). My mom's Goldie, that I posted earlier & is popular with this sub, was suddenly acting strange yesterday. He is a mischievous boy so he never slowed down until morning of. I got a call from my mom that he is listless and fainting. I rushed over to her place with a test, a hospital tank, and all necessary meds/conditioners.

The nitrite was at 5 ppm! I tried Prime but it was already too late. As I'm rushing to set up the hospital, I have an eye on him and I see him curl and stop breathing. I literally run over, dragged him out and put him in a fresh cup of conditioned water with air blasting. He comes back after 30 seconds. (I was ready to do CPR. Yes you can do CPR on. Goldfish and even goldfish that have been out of water for a while have been resuscitated in the past).

It turns out that the nitrating bacteria population was disturbed 14 days ago when I serviced her canister filter. The nitrite had built up slowly enough that he managed to adapt to it. Being a mischievous boy, he didn't really show any signs until the night before when mom spotted her near the water outlet but didn't register it as a symptom.

It's important to check your water frequently specially after servicing a filter! My mom had a test kit but she relied on me to manage her aquarium and I had been away for 2 weeks. She now has instructions written and a journal to keep her accountable to document things.

These babies might be cheap to replace but they are our babies nonetheless and deserve every bit of care that can be afforded to them.

We are forever responsible for what we have tamed. ❤️

Transferring 2 fancies from 17 gallon to a 50 gallon

Posted: 15 Oct 2020 05:48 PM PDT

Hey all! See post history for some context, I have on the way a new 50gallon tank and am seeking advice on the most efficient way to move my fishy friends to the new tank.

Current Tank: 65 litre cage - https://www.aquaone.com.au/2015-04-16-04-47-04/2015-04-16-06-00-17/aquariums/horizon-2/item/3157-56168 Using included LED and Heater. Thin layer of blue pea gravel that is flaking apart. Eheim classic 350 (recent addition in prep for new tank). Single air bubbler. Single Amazon Sword plant (trialing planted in tank).

New tank: 200 litre moderate sized home - https://www.aquariumfactory.com.au/product/petworx-deluxe-aquarium-4-foot-48/ Fresh 20k bag of natural black pea gravel.

Spare hardware: AquaOne HOB that came with 65L tank. Pisces SH200 HOB filter.

My thoughts are:

I need to cycle the new tank as fast as possible, but my understanding with tank cycling is that I'm actually cycling the filter rather than the tank... The new tank is going to be using the established cannister filter...

With that in mind

  1. Set up 2x spare HOB filters on 65 L tank alongside the existing cannister filter so that good bacteria can transfer/grow to the HOBs.
  2. put new gravel in new tank, 3/4 fill new tank with fresh water, move the cannister over to the new tank.
  3. ??? Monitor new tank for a week or so ??
  4. Move heater over - move fish over when temps are similar

I see plenty of guides on fishless and with-fish cycling, but not a lot on 'upgrading' or transitioning.

Is it simpler or more complex than I think?

Should I get a second heater so both tanks can be heated while transitioning!

Thanks in advance!

Recently my goldfish haven’t been moving much. I know that this could mean low oxygen but I have a lot of plants and two bubblers running 24/7. I’m not sure what else it could be. All they do is lay in this corner on the substrate. Please help

I found this resin Fancy for $3 at local Thrift shop. Do you think it's too sharp to add to a tank (after treating with liquid rubber)?

My goldfish died the first day I got it

Posted: 15 Oct 2020 09:30 AM PDT

I got 6 goldfish in an aquarium and was very excited about it. It's a 25 litre aquarium and it has an attached filter to it. We filled it up with filtered drinking water coming from a water filter and used the chlorine remover thing like the aquarium owner told us to. I gave them fish food, possible a bit too much for them. However today while I was about to feed the fish I saw one of them floating motionless at the top of the tank. I took it out and It still didnt move. Its gills weren't moving either, we called the vendor from whom we got the goldfish and he said that it's dead. I am still confused as to why this happened and what I can do to protect the other 5, please help

I think my Black Moor has pop eye in the left eye, can anyone confirm that for me? And if so what is the best treatment for this?

Swim Bladder Issues

Posted: 15 Oct 2020 09:25 AM PDT

Hey folks. Curious of the community opinion on keeping fish with pretty consistent swim bladder issue. My pearlscale is 4.5 yrs old, about tennis ball sized and i love him dearly. In the past couple months, he would have floating issues after eating but it went away in a day or so. Currently we're on day 4 or 5 of pretty consistent side-floating at top of tank. I'm not giving up on him yet but I want to do some deep thinking on his quality of life.

When is it no longer humane to keep a fish around with swim bladder issues?
