| Posted: 01 Oct 2020 07:27 AM PDT Hey guys! I currently have a 29 gal tall with some sand substrate and a the following plants: * java fern * Anubias * Marimo moss balls I have a seachem tidal 55 filter. Basically what I'm wondering is, will this setup be good for an axolotl? What are some tips you can give me for caring for one? I want to do thorough research and know if it's possible before actually buying one! [link] [comments] | ||

| Having trouble in-cycling an axolotl tank Posted: 30 Sep 2020 11:09 PM PDT I have an axolotl tank that is refusing to cycle, and I can't seem to figure out why. When I first got my axolotl, Roy, I didn't know too much about cycling, and assumed it would cycle within a week. That was almost two months ago, and I'm starting to run out of ideas. I have a 60L tank (roughly 15 gallons) with one axolotl, who is about 15-20cm. I use a Tidal 35 hang on back filter, with a coarse sponge and a bag of gravel for bacteria to attach to. The tank has river rocks along the bottom, and is moderately planted. Temperature fluctuates a bit, but usually sits between 18-20C. pH is about 7-7.5, gH is 12ish and kH is about 8. I've been carefully monitoring the tank, and I've never picked up any nitrate or nitrate. Ammonia goes up steadily, and I do a water change every 4 or 5 days when it reaches about 1ppm. Roy has never shown signs of stress, apart from swimming into the glass a lot. No ammonia burns either as far as I can tell. I've tried using API Quick Start, Seachem Stability, as well as transferring filter media and gravel from both a tropical tank and my outdoor pond. I thought that the filter might not be powerful enough. However I'm not sure if this is the case. The way I see it, if the filter wasn't powerful enough, but the tank was otherwise cycled, I would still be measuring some nitrites/nitrates. This is just my personal logic, so correct me if I'm wrong. I also thought that there could be nitrates in my tank, but they are being absorbed by plants before I can measure them. I don't think this is true either, as I measure nitrites daily, and nitrates before each water change. I have never measured anything except 0. I can think of 2 main options going forward:
TL;DR Two month old axolotl tank has never shown any nitrites/nitrates. Looking for advice on cycling. I appreciate any advice you guys can give, so thanks in advance for the help. [link] [comments] | ||

| HELP-Very small lumps on gills Posted: 01 Oct 2020 01:16 AM PDT Hello! I noticed two extremely small lumps, like 1 mm diameter spheres, on the gills of one of my three axies. They are not on the fluffy portion of the gill, and they do not look fluffy as a fungus either. The two tank mates have not developed anything like that. I tried to take a picture but they are too small to see on camera. However they developed over the course of 1-2 days so I am concerned. Main water paramethers are as usual: Temperature: 21°C Ammonia: 0ppm NO2 0 ppm NO3 0.01 ppm Ph 7.2 (it changed a little bit a week ago when I added a new piece of driftwood) I have a double canister filter and a chiller. But they malfunctioned yesterday so I am now taking them apart. Room temperature is 22°C still, so no problem with that. The tank is a 1.2 m long, a little above 30 gallons, holding three male axolotls. Any ideas? [link] [comments] | ||
