Just witnessed my longspine urchin eating a limpet off the glass Posted: 09 Sep 2020 09:52 PM PDT I have a pretty big longspine urchin (Its body is about 2 inches across). My tank has a large population of limpets, who graze algae on the glass. The moon lights of my tank are on, and I happened to take a glance at the tank when I noticed my urchin sitting on the glass over a limpet. I have noticed the urchin doing this before, but this time I wanted to get a closer look. The urchin used its teeth to get under the shell of the limpet, pulled it off the glass, and put the whole thing in its mouth. It looked like it shattered the shell too, before it swallowed everything. I couldn't find anything online about longspines eating limpets, so I was curious if this was known behavior or not. Everything I read said they were algae-eaters only. [link] [comments]

Dosing vibrant and microbacter7 at the same time Posted: 09 Sep 2020 09:26 PM PDT My 32 gallon has now been set-up for 3-4 months and it doesn't seem to have the bacteria needed to breakdown nitrate. I cycled this tank using aquavitro seed which was 1.5 years old, is it possible that it did not provide all of the needed bacteria? My tank now has clowns and a few corals but started growing a ton of hair algae. I tried to combat this by adding a protein skimmer and did a ton of water changes but my nitrates stayed around 30-40. I'm now dosing vibrant to kill the algae but I would also like to start dosing microbacter7 to give it more bacteria to naturally get rid of nitrates. Is this a bad idea to dose both at the same time? [link] [comments]
Anyone else waiting for a Red Sea tank? How long does it take to get one these days? Posted: 09 Sep 2020 01:35 PM PDT The company I ordered from said Red Sea drop ships them when they get them in.. any idea how long the average wait is these days? [link] [comments]
Posted: 09 Sep 2020 08:48 PM PDT I added a Firefish to the tank last Thursday, so roughly a week ago today. While feeding today, I noticed his left fin was nipped. Nothing major at all, but definitely nipped. Not sure what did it because I've seen no aggression whatsoever between any of the fish, even at feeding time. Most likely culprit is my orange Ocellaris Clown. Him and a black Ocellaris were added at the same time, and he was definitely bullying the black one for about the first week and nipping his fins, although that has since stopped and they're peaceful now. If it is in fact the orange clown that nipped the Firefish, should I be worried or is this common territorial behavior for newcomers that wears off as they're in the tank longer? As I said I've otherwise noticed zero aggression between them. The clowns barely even go near the Firefish, let alone chase or bite at it. The clowns hosted the pump, so they mainly stay next to it all day which is at the top of the tank in the middle, my Watchman stays at and under his rock with his Pistol Shrimp on the far right side of the tank, and the Firefish seems to have adopted a rock on the far left of the tank and also made his little cave underneath it. The Firefish does wander more than the others though. Maybe he went too close to the Clowns' "anemone" and got nipped then? [link] [comments]
Posted: 09 Sep 2020 08:27 PM PDT Hey guys! So I'm looking into starting my own reef/salt water tank. I've always loved the idea of creating my own reef tank and I want to act on it soon, I just don't know where to start. I'm a college student so budgeting is really important, I do know this hobby can get really expensive. I was watching videos on a BioCubes but buying a new one seems really expensive, I'm not sure if it's worth the price or if getting a used one is the better option. Any advice on what I should start with is appreciated. Also, sorry if formating is bad I'm on mobile [link] [comments] |
