Fossil in Water Jarrarium

Looking to put a fossil in my jarrarium to add some interest, but concerned it might cause problems with the water quality? Or am I worrying about nothing? It's a 2ltr kilner with some java fern and marimo moss ball

I definitely killed my first jarrariums, could I get some feedback?

So before I found this sub, I had some empty large pickle jars that I cleaned out.

I put some dye free gravel on the bottom, added an aquatic plant from PetSmart, filled with aquarium water I got from a friend who has a fish tank, and added "pest snails" that PetSmart let me have.

It didn't survive a week before the snails all died and the plants started seeing black spots.

So, I've been doing some research and I want to try again. Here's what I've learned but I want to make sure I understand correctly:

  • Go to a pond/lake and collect some dirt. About 1-2 inches.
  • Collect some of the pond/lake water.
  • Add flora, either from pond or aquatic plants or a moss ball
  • Wait a few weeks to see if the flora survive, if it does, add snails

Edit: I have a glass gallon jug

I really don't wanna kill any more snails so correct me if there's anything I should do/not do!

What are these white bugs on my glass? They are everywhere, and their emergence has coincided with two of my shrimp dying.
