Tank was looking good this morning, too bad about the tanins

Posted: 09 Sep 2020 06:22 AM PDT

Hi. Does anyone know what these clear balls are on all of my plants? They weren’t there last night...I just put my single goldfish in the tank 3 days ago so I want to make sure it’s not a result of negative water chemistry.

I named him Orchid for the amazing tail

Outdoor Goldfish Pond Affected By California Fires

Posted: 09 Sep 2020 08:09 PM PDT

I had a small outdoor Goldfish Pond with 3 orandas, about medium sized, unfortunately due to the recent fires we had to evacuate and the smoke caused the loss of 2 of the goldfish. The last one survived and we got it out when we came back but there is still a lot of smoke in the air. Currently he's in a 10 gallon spare tank I had at home with a new filter I just went out and bought. How long do you think he'd be able to stay in this tank until conditions are suitable to go back outside with some potential new buddies? Obviously this tank isn't cycled and I'm doing weekly water changes on it. Any signs I should be looking out for? Thanks!

He does this a lot along with staying near the bottom scavenging, I wanted to make sure it’s normal behavior (more details in comment)

SOS, New Goldfish owners realizing we were terribly misinformed, want to make it right ASAP

Posted: 09 Sep 2020 12:56 PM PDT

Ok as the title suggests, we (my spouse and I) are owners of two wonderful goldfish! Unfortunately due to a very serious miscommunication with the store that we purchased them from our set up is woefully inadequate by every metric. OK, so we want to make it as right as possible. I received some advice from a small specialty animal shop near me, and I wanted to confirm with you all that what I have been told is indeed correct. First paragraph is explaining where we are right now. The second paragraph is what we were advised to do. And for those that are curious as to how this miscommunication happened, that is explained in the third paragraph. Thank you so much in advance for any and all insight! We love our goldfish, and want them to live as long and enjoyable lives as possible, and it seriously breaks our hearts knowing that they have not been living in a good environment this past year.

Where we are now:

We have a 5.5gal tank with two pond comets. (Once again I will re-iterate, I now realize how bad of a set up for these guys that is) They have lived in said 5.5 tank for right at 1 year now. For the majority of that year we were feeding them Tetra Tropical flakes. Both of them appear to be healthy, outside of the fact that they are still both just over 1.5 inches in length. Their colors have darkened and become a bit more vibrant over that year vs. the paler washed out orange they were when we first got them. They both swim all over the tank, top to bottom, and follow us around and seem very active. We recently bought 2 things 1.) OmegaOne Goldfish Pellets after hearing that the flakes are not very good for them, or the tank. But I have also heard that might not be the best solution either. (See next paragraph) and 2.) A veggie clip to be able to put spinach in the tank for them to eat. So that is the place we are at right now. [Edit] Also, our tank does not have any living plants in it.

What we have been advised to do:

Ok, so I initially posted over to the aquarium subreddit a question about food, and there I explained the setup we have now, and I was blown out of the water with people saying how bad of a set up we have for gold's. I picked up a few pieces of what I should do there, but I was pointed to this subreddit. It was this post that made me realize there had been a terrible misunderstanding. after talking to a local non-chain "Exotic Pet Specialist" I was given an initial rundown of what I needed to do. So the advice I was given was mostly from the local store near me, but there were a few things I was told from that subreddit, I would appreciate feedback on.

Tank: First and most obvious, I need a larger tank. On the other subreddit a few people mentioned that they believed I permanently stunted their growth. The person at the store that I spoke with said they didn't think it would be permanent, but it definitely did keep them from growing for their time in the tank. They believed that they would start to grow again if I got a larger tank. They advised that when fully grown that 2 pond comets would need a 100 gallon tank, but that for the time being (because it sounds like due to COVID in some way that that size tank is harder to come by right now) I would be good moving them up to a 20 gallon tank until they started getting to about 4-5" then they would need to go to a 100 gallon tank. What are your assessments of this? I'm looking around for the largest used tank I can find in my area, and would a 20-50 gallon tank work as a good intermediary step? If so how long would you think that would last for till I needed to get a larger one?

Food: The reason I initially posted to the other subreddit that started this whole journey, was me switching from flakes to pellets, and noticing they upon first eating them would keep spitting them back out and then immediately eating it again. After talking with the person at the store they said that due to their small size they think that the pellets are probably too big, and while they are still small I should switch back to a flake, but a goldfish flake rather than the tropical flakes. Is this correct, and if so any recommendations?

Food pt.2: Also we bought the veggie clip for spinach. And I'm unclear as to if the spinach is meant to just hang out in the tank for them to nibble on as desired, or if just like the food, it needs to be intentionally sized to what they eat in a short window. Any advice here is great! (I've heard peas are great too!)

THANK YOU AGAIN EVERYONE! Seriously we want our fish to have as happy long lives as we can give them despite this first year. Lucious and Vincent greatly appreciate your help!!!!

The miscommunication for those curious:

So the long story short of what went wrong in communication, is that they explained that the 2 pond comets that they gave us to start our tank [5.5 gallon] were very hardy and great for starting a tank's levels when you first start the tank. And they told us that after a couple of weeks we could bring them back to the store and get the other breed of fish that we were originally going to get, once the tank's levels were balanced. (I apologize if my terminology is off, we are still very much so beginners at this) The major communication breakdown happened here. We understood what they were saying as "IF" we wanted to bring them back, I can't recall them even saying what breed it was and even if they had we had no idea what size that comet golds are supposed to be, since we weren't expecting to go home with that type we didn't research it beforehand. And they have appeared healthy and strong with the original directions we were given. And after the couple of weeks we really enjoyed the personalities of our two little guys, and decided to keep them. So yeah, I don't blame the store for in any way trying to intentionally mislead us, there was just a lapse in understanding with what was said.

Goldfish is sick, need advice.

Posted: 09 Sep 2020 08:51 AM PDT

My Goldfish is sick with a swim bladder infection and I don't know what to do. I called two vets and they wouldn't help me without bringing the fish in and I can't afford to spend money on getting him checked out. I read the wiki for swim bladder treatment but wanted to get some advice from people that may have gone through this before.

What we've done:

Noticed issue on 09/05 and immediately cleaned tank and put fish back in and stopped feeding until 09/08 when I put a few skinned peas in the water. I watched him eat one but he's not been able to get to the others to eat them.

I did put a weekender in the tank as well as I figured he might be able to get to it and it is not floating food which I now understand could be what caused the issue. Should I take that out?

Is there anything else I can try? I saw something about adding some salt to the tank, should I try that? Just use table salt?

How long do I let this go before the humane thing to do is to euthanize him? I did buy some clove oil in case it comes to that. Any tips on administering?

He is 8 years old so not sure if he can recover from this. Poor guy, I just wish I could help him.

To add some of the details requested by the automoderator the tank is 10 gallons. No changes to food or tank. He is the only fish we have. There are no decorations in the tank.
