what do you call a group of goldfish? a herd? a flock? goldengroup?

Posted: 11 Sep 2020 12:13 PM PDT

My goldies get a weekly large water change. I turn off everything to do it. Turning the lights back on is my favorite!

Goldfish not doing well :(

Goldfish not doing well :(

I'm nervous to post here because after reading the wiki I realized that I've made a lot of mistakes as a goldfish owner. But I love my fish dearly, and he's not doing well, so I'm hoping you guys can help without judging me too harshly.

Greeny is 15 years old. I rescued him from a school science project in 2006 and he quickly became a very important part of the family. He's lived his whole life in a medium-sized plastic bowl (I know) eating flake food (I know). He's never had any health issues until the past month.

Problems I've noticed (starting around 8/1):

  • Floating to the surface of the bowl, usually after I clean him.
  • Black coloring on the edges of his fins (see photo).

Things I've done to try to help:

  • I took a sample of his water to Petco and they ran some tests on it for ph, nitrites, nitrates, ammonia, etc. Everything came back normal. The only noteworthy thing is that we have hard water.
  • I've started doing 50% water changes after learning that 100% water changes are a big no-no. I've always cleaned him 1x week.
  • I've reduced feeding to 1x day instead of 2x day.

I've consulted with two people at Petco, and they had completely opposite ideas—one said I should buy him a tank with a filter and condition the water, and the other said that I should keep him in his bowl (since that worked for him for so long) and just change his water more frequently and reduce feeding.

I'm at a total loss, and willing to do whatever it takes to make sure he's healthy and comfortable. If you have any guidance, I'd be very grateful for it!

Greeny

Redit meet - Miss Piggy (black & orange Oranda) - Chicken (red & white ryukin) and - Kitty Kitty (black moor) - 40gl

Just got this guy yesterday and he was mostly black with a white belly, by about three hours later he looked like this, silver and brown. Should I be worried about the rapid change?

Preventing breeding?

Posted: 11 Sep 2020 08:59 PM PDT

I'm going to get a second fish soon (had I only know how social goldfish were sooner!), but it seems like there is essentially no way to determine the gender of a goldfish for a hobbyist like me. It really doesn't matter except that I don't want to be dealing with a bunch of fry in the spring as my house warms up.

Is there any way to be sure I have a non breeding pair, or discourage it?

Floating plants and goldfish

Posted: 11 Sep 2020 10:44 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I was wondering if any of you have any success growing floating plants (specifically frogbit) with goldfish, mine seem to stay green and healthy, though everytime there is a new runner it is ripped off from the mother plant and so I find lots of decaying leaves and little new growth, I wonder if the high flow also has an impact on this. Does anyone know of any solutions to growing them despite these difficulties?

HELP: Silica(te)-Free Sand for Goldfish Aquarium?

Posted: 11 Sep 2020 08:15 AM PDT

Hi,

I want to change my aquarium substrate from gravel to sand and am not sure where to start... my gravel vac is very powerful so I am looking for a large-grain sand and I am looking for something that I can buy for a good price. As well, I would like it to be free of silica/silicate. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!
