Question about the inevitable- information in comments.

My single tails stay in the pond all year, the fancies come inside. Usually I just stuff my 75g tanks full and do extra water changes, but this time I made the pond fish their own 110g indoor winter pond!

Euthanasia for 19 year old fish :(

Posted: 14 Sep 2020 10:08 AM PDT

Hi all,

My family's fish hasn't been keeping well for months (dropsy, probably related to age). She's also been sick on and off for a year, but she was still active and happy throughout so I stopped myself from using the clove oil I had bought. I upgraded her food and added nice plants and tried to make her last months/year happy, and she did a great job—completely surpassed my expectations.

I know letting go is the right thing to do, but I'm scared of using the clove oil incorrectly and causing her pain. I am still attempting wound treatment, but I absolutely don't want to drag on her suffering with the way things are looking.

How much clove oil do I use per gallon? I'm also just looking for support; I've had my fish since I was six, and I knew it was coming, but I feel sad :( I'm having a hard time even thinking about watching her die by my own hands, but I can't let her suffer either.

Thanks in advance.

Some fish nibbles to celebrate an (almost) fully cycled tank

Posted: 14 Sep 2020 08:28 AM PDT

Are my big boys resting ? They swim around most of the time but 4-5times a day they will just hide and rest like that at the bottom.. is it something I should worry about ? I also notice that the younger one seems to try to nip the other one on the head and butt, not sure if its playing or attacking

Black moor floating one night, sinking the next

Posted: 14 Sep 2020 02:19 PM PDT

Okay so I have one 3-year-old black moor in a 20 Gallon tank. In the past he's occasionally tended to sink slowly if he stops swimming. This usually happens the first few days after I do a water change and then he is fine for the next week and a half.

Last night, after dinner (floating fish flakes which he has never had a problem with) he kept floating upwards extremely quickly. He was very distressed and kept swimming really quickly down and bumping into things. At one point he found a plant to anchor against and was literally head down, tail up.

It was really upsetting to see him like that because just that morning he had looked really happy. I gave him a pea and he ate it. This morning, I got up and now he is sinking quite quickly. He is still able to swim around but the moment he stops he sinks to the bottom. At least he is a lot less distressed about this.

I would really appreciate some advice. I haven't fed him yet today and was considering fasting him for a day or two. And maybe changing some of the water and adding salt? I really don't know.

So, I did the treatment that you guys recommended for Tipsy (her new name) but nothing has changed. She can flip over on her own and eats just fine, I’ve even started tong training. Do you guys think that she is just being a goofball or is something seriously wrong?

Advice for end of salt treatment?

Posted: 14 Sep 2020 10:10 AM PDT

Hey everyone! So unfortunately after a few days of owning my new goldfish I noticed a bit of fin rot going on. I quickly set up a 10 gallon and over the course of 3 days upped the salinity to 0.2% (around 2 tsp per gallon). It worked well and I'm noticing a lot of fin regrowth and I'm planning on taking him out soon! My question is this: what's the best method for reacclimimating him back to 100% freshwater? Should I just do water changes and slowly remove water and not add salt back in? Or does it have to be more gradual than that? Any advice would be appreciated!

Opinions on best media for the Tidal 35?

Posted: 14 Sep 2020 09:23 AM PDT

I'm upgrading my filter to the Tidal 35 for 2 goldies and I wanted to know folks' opinions of the best media to put in there. Was considering Purigen because I've had really great luck with that in the past, but am unsure if activated charcoal is actually necessary. I don't have any plants in the tank and am only considering marimo moss balls if I add them, as it seems to make a difference for plant nutrients what you add in there.

pH recommendations

Posted: 14 Sep 2020 06:12 AM PDT

My goldfish are coming in the mail tomorrow, but I have a question about pH. In my cycled, established tank, it reads at about 8.0-8.2 consistently. My quarantine tank has water from the same source, but reads at about 7.0-7.4 and fluctuates a bit more. Should I use a pH product in either/both tanks to get them to match up and not fluctuate? If so, what products are recommended?
