Do you know why m axolotl died? Posted: 10 Sep 2020 06:21 AM PDT Hello. I just had my axolotl die yesterday. I was just wondering if anybody knew why, and I'll give you the symptoms. About four months ago, I took over the careof this axolotl from someone else. They had ben keeping it with tons of sand, rarely feeding it, and letting cyanobacteria completely take over the tank. When I took over, I removed all the sand, and cleaned it up, and (since it was very thin-looking) I fed it slightly more than recommended. Part of the reason why I thought it was even thinner than it really was is that it had lumps on its elbows, two symmetrical lumps on each elbow, that I thought were protruding bones. So I fed it a lot, but then on one of the arms the lumps entirely disappeared. I thought that meant something good -- if it went away on one arm, it should go away on the other if I continue doing what I have been. But nevertheless, when I realised its arms weren's as skinny as I thought, I began to feed it quite a bit less. The other arm did not lose these lumps. Another thing is this: starting only a few days afer I took over its care, (it may even have happened long before I took over, that's just when I noticed it) it would eat oddly. When I fed it, (I was feeding it live whole nightcrawlers at this point, what it had eaten all its life) it would instantly snap at the food hungrily, then all but swallow it, then almost entirely spit it out, then suck it back in, spit it out, suck it back in etc.. This usually went on for about 2 minutes every time I fed it, and sometimes it spat out the worm entirely, and I had to feed it again. Nevertheless, t would almost always end up eating the worm after a bit. I thought that perhaps the problem was that nightcrawlers were too big (even though that's what it had been eating all its life) and I tried feeding it salamander pellets. He ate the salamander pellets without spitting them out. After that, he ate nightcrawlers only a few more times. Ever since I ook over his care, he would often float at the surface, but still spent most of his time crawling on the ground. But in the past month (I believe) he started spending almost all of his time floating, and when he crawled on the ground, his tail end floated up a bit, and his head end stayed on the ground. Then in the past two weeks or so, he would basically only float on the surface, and in the past few days, he would be floating tilted to the side, with some of his belly out of the water. This whole time, he was still eating. I tried at one point to feed him red wigglers, but he ignored them. I thought he had gone off his food, but no, he still ate the pellets just fine. In fact, I fed him pellets the day before yesterday. During the whole time I was trying to tak ecare of him, I was using frozen water bottles to keep the water as cool as I could. I always added enough to bring the temperature down to 65 (degrees F) roughly, but in 24 hours it would climb back up to somewhere between 68 73. I kept going like this, changing the water bottles and trying to keep it cool. That's pretty much the whole story. Last night I found him lying on his back, and I thought he was alive, but now that I think of it I don't even know whether he was already dead or not, because he only twitched a little bit. Anyway I put him in the fridge, far too late, I know, but That was the only thing I could think of. In the morning, as you could predict, he was dead. Apparantly the fridge was too cold (I had thought the power level was the temp, so when I raised it I was actually making it colder) but I don't think the fridge would have done much good anyway, and the too-coldness probably made his death a bit more comfortable I suppose. Anyway, this is really sad for me, and I was just hoping if anybody knows what all that was? It would really help. Thanks. [link] [comments]

Posted: 09 Sep 2020 07:50 PM PDT So this question is aimed at those of you who live in Australia or in places where you experience extreme summer heat (even if you don't live somewhere extremely hot, if you have any recommendations I'll hear them). Where I live in Australia, many days in summer are around the high 30 degrees C and low 40 degrees C. However, on the hottest days temperatures can reach up to 46 degrees C. Unfortunately, my bedroom (where my axie lives) is the hottest room in the house. And yes, I know that is not ideal. I live at home with my mother in a small home and there is nowhere else to put him. I currently have an aquarium chiller that was not cheap (like around $300) but it doesn't have any affect on the water temperature so I might as well not even have it. We survived last summer (barely) by constantly rotating frozen water bottles in his tank and leaving the AC on most of the day. Even now, with spring only literally just beginning, I'm having to put ice in his tank to keep it to a safe temperature. Do you guys have any recommendations for aquarium chillers that actually work and work in extreme heat? I don't want to waste more money on a chiller that isn't going to cool down the tank. The most highly rated ones I've seen are over $1000 and I just can't afford that. [link] [comments]

Posted: 09 Sep 2020 09:26 PM PDT hello. sorry i am new to keeping fish but i have been doing research for the past 3 days non stop. i have been trying to find a carpeting plant that would work for axolotls. some people say that some plants are good in low light with no co2 while others say that the same plant need lots of light and co2. its really hard to see what plants would work good. (maybe i am just bad at researching) are there any plants that would carpet that would work for axolotl? if not that is ok! [link] [comments]
Posted: 09 Sep 2020 01:28 PM PDT So I was trying to feed my axolotls and one of them freaked out when I held the worm in her face. She literally almost jumped out the tank on the first try. Second attempt, she swam away to the back of the tank. Now she won't eat. —Anyone else experience this before? [link] [comments]
