Hi all, just wondering if these white or green spots are normal skin abrasions or something I should be concerned about. Toothless here has a few around his body but they don’t seem to match any fungus descriptions I read.

Question

Posted: 18 Sep 2020 02:31 PM PDT

I'm currently in the process of conceptualizing an aquascape for my 45 gallon based on the nighttime forest in the Avatar movie. I'm going to use sand and very large rocks to create different shelves and caves, and I'll use a mixture of real and fake plants. I'm thinking of using an led hood, like what you use for glofish.

Someone I know breeds GFP axies in lucies and melanoid. I'm thinking that a GFP would look absolutely incredible in that fluorescent environment. My question is, though, would an axie be able to live comfortably in an led glofish tank? My wild is only exposed to light when I turn it on in my bedroom, so I dont really know if they'd be able to live with one on for most of the day. Like I said, I'm planning on making a bunch of caves, so it'd have plenty of places to hide. Would it be comfortable living in a multilevel aquascape like the one I described?

Help with gill damage

Posted: 18 Sep 2020 09:57 PM PDT

TLDR: Accidentally caused a likely ammonia spike and now one of Clouds gill stocks has visible damage and maybe fungus. What is the best course of action to help him heal?

Full story so people can learn from my mistakes or want more background info.

So I've been a bad parent and my poor Cloud has some gill damage. He's in a 20 gallon long tank by himself. He's probably about a year old and is about 10.5" long. I keep him pretty well fed. I had to quarantine some fish so I borrowed one of his 2 well cycled sponge filters. I thought the tank should be aged enough to handle the bio load sans one filter. Well pretty sure at this point I was wrong. The tank got cloudy for a few days and I thought it was just some bacteria balancing out. That was probably also an ammonia spike but I never checked anything. The parameters are stable now. I've been stressed out because those other fish I got have ich and it's being a pain a treat so my focus has been off of cloud. Well today my wife noticed his gill damage and now I'm writing this. The damage is really only on one gill stock. The middle third seems to be missing most of the filaments. Maybe there's some fungus with that or it's half burned gills that look weird. What are the best methods to help him heal? Is keeping the water super clean sufficient to let him heal? How large of water changes should I be doing how often during this process? Tonight I will start with a 50% change.
