tips on making a pond more fun for koi?

Posted: 08 Sep 2020 06:07 PM PDT

we've finally added some koi to our pond two weeks ago, and it's been really fun watching fish drama unfold.

i never really knew how intelligent koi were and idiosyncratic each one is!

i want to make our pond more interesting and mentally stimulating for the koi. do you guys add anything to your pond for your fish to play with and keep them more active than they already are?

we already have a mini waterfall that provides extra oxygen for them and water plants ::)

Pond update. Concrete is poured, just got to wait for it to set and we can get it sealed.

Will metallic colors fade over time?

I really like the metallic colors of koi, but will they fade over time? I know the patterns & colors can change, so it made me wonder if the sparkle would too.

Moved to a house in NJ and do not want the koi in the pond. How do I go about rehoming?

Hi all, title says it all. Recently moved to a house with a koi pond but the upkeep would be too much with a baby on the way. Does anyone know of a way to re-home them or resources in northern NJ?

Advice needed for baby fish

Posted: 08 Sep 2020 10:56 AM PDT

I bought a house back in March, and inherited a pond with 1 koi and 6 goldfish in it. I had to do a whole lot of research, and fortunately found a local aquarium shop whose owner has a ton of experience with ponds of his own, so I'm managing.

About a month or two ago, I noticed that we had some spawning, and shortly thereafter some babies appeared.

So far, they all seem to be growing alright.. but I'm not too sure how they are. I don't have any aquatic plants, only what little algae grows in the pond. They seem to be feeding on that?

The babies (aside from one of the larger ones) won't come to the surface yet unfortunately, so I can't feed them food that way. Does anyone have any suggestions on making sure they get the proper amount of food? Any other general suggestions for the babies would be welcome, too.

I have a lot of algae in my pond, what do I do?

I have a 500l pond, 2 small koi.

The filter I have is the Blagdon for small ponds, it has a fountain and a uv and a filter.

I have a bubbler for oxygen.

I put in 2 lilly plants, and elodea and some milfoil.

However, there is (I think) blanket weed, and it floats to the top. It grows on the side at an alarming pace.

I have put in Tetra pond algorem. I took out the plants.

What decreases it, what increases it... what do I do?

I can tolerate a small amount but it has been an explosion.
