Water change and pH problem, pls help :(

Posted: 20 Aug 2020 11:28 PM PDT

Does anyone else struggle with pH lowering during water changes? My tap water is at a pH of 7.6, but it shoots up to 8.2 after being aerated or left out for 24 hours. I think my city has a ton of CO2 in the tap and tries to solve the issue by putting a bunch of buffers in the water so the pipes don't corrode from acidity.

My tank is at a pH of 8.2 and I've been limited to 25% water changes using aged water since I'm scared of pH shocking my goldfish. Has anyone dealt with this/found an easier way of doing water changes?

One of my babies is losing his orange. Is this normal? Just out of curiosity, because otherwise he is one big healthy boi

3 goldfish 5 gallon tank

Posted: 20 Aug 2020 09:57 AM PDT

please read

Hey everybody! I'm looking for some advice. I'm building up my big goldfish aquarium but hate constantly disturbing my goldfish so I moved them into a 5 gallon tank that I normally put them in while the big tank get a good clean. I was thinking of leaving them in the 5 gallon while I put together their tank which may take maybe a month or so.

here are my question(s)

How often should I make water changes a week while they are in this 5 gallon?

What should I look out for while in this small space?

is this smart to do and should I even be doing this? Haha

Goldfish with tumors. Help?

Posted: 20 Aug 2020 05:01 AM PDT

Hello! This is my first post to Reddit, so hi everyone! I'd like to start by saying English is not my first language, so please forgive any mistakes. I'll follow by saying that I am by no means an expert in fish, we just got some as pets when I was a child and well, here we are.

I'll give you a bit of background first: when I was about 8 years old I got it in my head that I wanted goldfish so we got a small tank and got a few fish, that died after a few years (I believe two we bought were sick and spread it to the rest). After that, we emptied the tank, cleaned it and started again with 3 goldfish. I remember having them in 2008, but we could have got them in 2007, I'm not sure. One of them died within 2 or 3 years.

The other two went on, grew quite a bit and one of them developed some tumors in front of his dorsal fin, but they didn't seen to bother him. I asked around (no specialized vets anywhere near where I live, so pet shop specialist were the best I could find) and everyone said the same: it doesn't hurt, it's like a "mole". In 2017 this fish with the tumors died, and the remaining one started developing them (he had two small bumps, but nothing alarming). He's my only remaining fish and I don't think I'll get any more after him. The tumors have grown and they don't look great, they look "eaten" and irregular, with what I suspect are some necrosed bits. As you may have noticed, he's at least 12 years old, possibly 13, and although I don't know how much longer he can live (I guess he's pretty old but I honestly don't know much about fish so...) I'd like to ask if any of you know anything about this. Like I said, there are no vets who treat goldfish near me, I've looked, and I'm pretty sure that, even if any of you here are vets, you wouldn't be able to give me an accurate diagnosis without a proper examination; still, if anyone has any experience/tips, I'll be very grateful.

I can try and post pictures later if you think they'd be helpful, if I figure out how to do it.
