My rescue goldfish died today after 6 awesome years and I just wanted to say thanks <3

6 years ago I was at a county fair, a last hurrah before I went off to college. I was dared to play a carnival game. When we realized the prizes were fish, we tried to throw the game, but somehow ended up winning. They handed me the sickest, saddest, goldfish I'd ever seen and I couldn't say no. We rushed straight home, where I proceeded to binge this subreddit and spend all my college dorm savings on him.

We named him Scelator because he was death white when we got him, and the first time we thought he might survive was riding on the escalator leaving. (It's like skelator but escalator. It made sense at the time.)

Scelator would be smuggled into my dorm, which had a max tank size of 10 gallons I blatantly ignored. He would be upgraded over the years to an 75 gallon and eventually a pond, which I set up and cycled between 3 different housing changes. The first paycheck I ever got I used entirely on a brand new pump for him.

He never grew back part of his face, so we always called him pug fish. Vets over the years would give us low estimates for how long he'd live but he always managed to stick around. His face healed but he had a jaw deformity so we had to feed small soft food. His gills never looked great, vets said there were areas that died and didn't function any more. I have no idea what I'm going to do with his pond now, but I think I'm going to keep my ears open for any more goldfish in bad shape and spoil them for as long as I can.

I just wanted to say thank you to this subreddit. You're partially why I made a Reddit account, you're definitely why Scelator lived so long. I don't even want to think about what his life could have been like if I hadn't taken a chance on the partially eaten white goldfish in a bag. I know he made my world so much better just by being in it.

Finally got pictures working! Here's some older photos and videos, once he got his pond he spent all his time hiding in the plants. Pics here

7 year old carnival gold fish

My comets (maybe the one shubunkin as well) had babies @_@ I'm going to be overrun. My pond isn't THAT big! I've seen at least 4 different sizes of fry... only a couple of each...but still...

I rushed my goldfish in for emergency surgery this morning.

Posted: 14 Aug 2020 01:01 PM PDT

As I type this she's in recovery, here's the story if you care to read.

I won her by accident at a fair 4 years ago, and she's the reason I got into this hobby. A couple weeks ago she started to get really plump and I contacted a vet, we treated her for parasites with no luck, thinking she was egg bound we just left her alone for a while. I went on vacation for a week and when I returned her tail was half missing, took her back to the vet where they ran multiple tests including an x ray, where she was properly diagnosed this time with an internal mass and secondary infection. I began giving her daily antibiotics injections to treat the infection, and she was doing alright, until yesterday. She began swimming upside down and laying at the bottom of the tank, we knew from the beginning that the mass was applying pressure to her swim bladder, so it was only a matter of time before she had buoyancy issues. I contacted the vet first thing in the morning and the very last thing I was expecting him to say was "let's get her in for surgery today". So since 8am this morning I've been trying desperately to occupy myself from the stress of this situation. The vet has just called me and said she's in recovery, I couldn't be happier. I can't speak too soon because there's still a chance of things going downhill in recovery, but I wanted to share this story with all of you.

For the few of you who are bound to say "it's just a fish" I understand if you don't feel the same way about your fish that I feel about mine, that's perfectly fine, but please respect me and my choices, and I'll respect yours.

Update: I'm sorry to do this all to you, she did not make it through recovery.

Update #2: Did not think I'd be making another update, shes still breathing, but barely. The vet thought she was dead but when he went to pick her up from the water she flopped right out of his hands. We are taking her home to make her comfortable regardless of the outcome.

Hey all! I've finally done a nice big tank upgrade to a 55 gallon and I'm looking for a friend (or possibly two or three) for my little oranda buddy, tell me your favourite kind so I can look into them a bit!

goldfish ate my bristlenose pleco? I dunno?

Posted: 14 Aug 2020 09:11 PM PDT

So I have 6 juvenile 'feeder style' common goldfish that are about 1.5 years old and one little bristlenose pleco all sort of same size and age.....in a matter of 24 hours, I was wondering "Where is my Pleco Boi?" We looked and looked and my Pleco Boi was just totally gone....and a little tiny white spine at the bottom immersed in the gravel....cleaned all the gravel, took out all the big ornamental structural rocks to hide behind......Did they really fucking eat him?????? I can't deal. We fed them all the time......Why would they eat him????

Better husbandry having worse results for fish.

Posted: 14 Aug 2020 09:15 AM PDT

I posted before about my comet, that was supposed to be food but is now living the good life on his own. Since he's been in his own tank, I have really upped my game with making sure he is being properly taken care of and am working on getting him a friend. (Have to reseal a quarantine tank for the new fish)

I test the water regularly, 25% water changes weekly, and have purchased products for beneficial bacteria. I had to treat him a couple weeks ago for a fungil infection on his mouth, and he looked better after. Now he looks like there is some scale rot on his gills, and little on his fin and tail. It seems like it happened over night, the day before he looked fine with no issues. I've been treating with stress coat, and I'm going to do another water change today, probably 50%. I'll be going to the store today to buy actual medication for treatment though. The parameters are currently 180 GH/KH, 7.5 PH, 0 Nitrite, and between 0-20 Nitrate (hard to tell exactly with the strips).

I honestly don't understand, he was doing fine in the tank before with the Oscar, and there were so many things wrong with the husbandry of that tank. It feels like the harder I try to make him a good home the worse he fairs.

Fancy goldfish patio pond advice?

Posted: 14 Aug 2020 05:50 PM PDT

Hey guys,

i've always been interested in fancy goldfish, but unfortunately i dont have room inside for a goldfish tank (instead i have four 5-10gal betta tanks) so i was wondering about patio ponds for fancy goldish.
i rent my apartment so i obviously cant be digging up my courtyard, but i thought a patio pond on my upstairs balcony would be good.

my main concern is the weather and was looking for advice about that. it's currently winter in australia and generally is dropping to around -2 to 2 degrees celcius. would the fish ok or is it commonplace to use a heater? same question when it comes to summer where its generally around 40+ Celsius in the middle of season. i was looking up some videos and articles but i couldnt really find specific answers for weather concerns.

tldr: how do i care for a fancy goldfish patio pond in the middle of winter and summer

thanks!

Need help with new pearlscale who has been bottomsitting.

Posted: 14 Aug 2020 04:16 PM PDT

On August 5th I received my new crowned pearlscale to finish my 55G aquarium. I have 2 other fish (Oranda and ranchu) I've had for a year in the same tank. For the first 7 days I got him he stayed in the same spot on the bottom rarely ever moving unless it was for food. On the 7th day he seemed to be a lot more active and moving around and swimming throughout the day but would occasionally go back to the same spot on the bottom to sit. I also treated with prazi on the 7th day as a precaution. Water Params are perfect and I check them everyday using the api master kit test. Within the past two days he has been a lot more active but still bottom sits for about half of the day. He shows no other signs of illness. Looks healthy as can be and is in good water. I guess my question is, is it normal for a fish to still be bottom sitting after 9 days after shipping. Has been fed repashy along with my other goldfish and eats really well. Edit: purchased from a VERY reputable company who quarantines all there fish and treats for parasites.

Help! What’s wrong?

Does my fish recognize me?

Posted: 14 Aug 2020 11:26 AM PDT

It seems like he's always chilling until I come in his view. Then he swims actively! Is it because I take care of him? Also, I slept next to him and when I woke up he woke up with me and started swimming. However I fell asleep again and when I woke up again, he also was sleeping. Again, he woke up after seeing me
